Rangers prospect dies during game

Quote:
NEW YORK (TICKER) —New York Rangers prospect Alexei Cherepanov died during a game in his native Russia on Monday night. He was 19.

The New York Post reported that Cherepanov suffered a heart attack and collapsed on the bench during Avangard Omsk’s game against Vityav Chekhov.

Former Rangers captain Jaromir Jagr had just finished a shift with Cherepanov and was talking to the him when the Russian suddenly collapsed.

TSN of Canada reported that medical officials attempted to get Cherepanov’s heart beating again. According to the web site, there was no ambulance present at the arena. The report stated that it took between “15 and 20 minutes” to transport Cherepanov from the arena to the hospital.

The Rangers observed a moment of silence in his honor prior to Monday’s game against the New Jersey Devils.

New York general manager Glen Sather addressed the tragedy in a statement released by the team.

“We are extremely saddened by the tragic passing of Alexei,” Sather said. “On behalf of the New York Rangers organization, I would like to extend our deepest sympathies to his family. Alexei was an intelligent, energetic young man with tremendous talent and an extremely bright future.”

The 17th overall selection in the 2007 draft, Cherepanov had been playing with Avangard Omsk of Russia’s Continental Hockey League. He had seven goals and five assists in 12 games for Avangard this season.

“He was a great kid,” Cherepanov’s agent, Jay Grossman, told TSN. “He had a great smile and was an outstanding player with a great future on and off the ice. It’s both shocking and devastating news for all of us.”

Damnnnn, I remember him as the "looking sad as he drops from a top 5 pick to 17th" guy in the draft a couple years ago.

It'd be nice if the Bruins could steal a win up in Montreal on opening night for the Canadiens. We never get bounces to go our way up there and we finally got one late in the third to tie it.

We need a name change for the thread by the way. :)

Oh well. We took a point when it was looking like we weren't going to get anything.

I see the Pens are back in their old habit of winning or losing games by one goal (more often than not in a SO or OT). Where's the Fleury from the playoffs? :(

Blackhawks fired their coach Denis Savard, hired Joel Quenneville. Kind of an odd choice four games into the year, and from what I know of Quenneville, he's not exactly a young players coach. Very strange.

Buffalo looks surprisingly great, Vanek is just out of control right now (though on that note Roy has done nothing so it balances out). Ruff is just too good of a coach, it's no surprise Briere and Drury have looked much more pedestrian since they left his system.

The Oilers are a really young, exciting team right now. They make a lot of mistakes, and don't always play solidly, but I'm loving it regardless. As long as the goaltending is great (and it has been), I don't see why they won't return to the playoffs this year - barring injuries, which always seem to haunt them.

Currently beating Calgary again.

Wild are the last undefeated in regulation team. Pretty impressive considering Gaborik is injured and Rolston and Demitra are gone. Lemaire needs to get coach of the year one of these years, no coach in the league has as much direct impact or importance as he does on the Wild. He's their franchise player, their Brodeur.

Watched my first game as a 'confirmed Leaf fan' today... I was flipping between first it and the Raptors and then the World Series, but from I saw, what a game to start with! A total back and forth goal frenzy culminating in an exciting shootout win. Hard to believe but the Leafs only have 1 less point than the Penguins right now, with equal games played.

And holy crap... the 48 shots on Brodeur were the most in a game he's faced in his CAREER

It'd be nice if the Bruins could score more than one goal tomorrow night, just for a change of pace. Luckily Thomas has been great in both of the 1-0 games, but it'd be nice to give him a padded lead. And based on both of his performances I don't think there's any question as to who are number one goalie is. Fernandez hasn't been bad early on or anything, but Thomas is playing out of his mind right now.

I hope you're still a fan of theirs when they're eliminated from the playoffs in mid-February.

FINALLY. The losing streak is over. Roloson made an unbelievable save there in the final minute to seal the deal.

This could probably be the start of another winning streak.

Awwww I was so ready to pwn you with a "The Leafs have more points than your team after an equal amount of games... na na na na na na" if they lost. Oh well, same amount is nothing to be proud of. Considering the state of the Leafs roster and all.

Number of times the Oilers have been in the Stanley Cup finals the last 30 years = 7
Number of times the Leafs have in the last 40 years = 0

The Leafs have never been in the finals since there was more than six teams. That means they've never won three consecutive playoff series.

I could go all day. You're too young a Leaf fan to really want to compete with me.

Number of time the Red Wings have been in the Stanley Cup Finals in the last 14 years = 5
