Re: Official Summer Olympics 2008 Thread
Some say the WC is bigger now and it may be in ratings but as a true Global event the Olympics are bigger, mostly because the Americans are paying attention. However the last WC was massive in NA and it will grow and grow....

Latvia has the exact same flag as Austria? Or is the white stripe always thinner in the Latvian flag?
I love Estonia's flag.

I love Estonia's flag. the white stripe is thinner...the Austrian flag has three equal bars. Also I think the red is a different shade, Latvia's is darker. Estonia's flag is very nice I agree. I like the Latvia SSR flag more than the present Latvian flag though. The SSR one is really weird.

Re: Official Summer Olympics 2008 Thread
Used to love the Olympics up through the 80's. Then in the 90's the reporting over here got crappy. Four years ago the sportscasters were so bad they literally forced me to shut the tv off. I hope it gets better. There are so many events I truly love watching, but here in the States its always about "the American." Like, the American could place dead last and (s)he would still get most of the news coverage for that event. Also, the human-interest stories have gotten cliche. I miss the world-wide broadcasted flirting, espresso at the starting line, building an entire NGO for disabled children, and designing ones own sprinting outfits. Now its just always about how the folks put up a second mortgage on the house and you're a child-star. Anyone in the states know a better channel to watch the events on that doesn't do this? The amount of commercials are getting irritating too.
I love swimming, diving, track-and-field, marathon, and gymnastics (women's, men's and rythmic) the most. Even though I feel genuinely guilty about liking to watch gymnastics. I also have some weird thing for the equestrian event with all the jumps and going through rivers and riding around the woods. I don't even know what that event is technically called, but its fantastic and feels like I've been transported to another time.

Re: Official Summer Olympics 2008 Thread
I'm sad that this is the last year CBC has the rights to the Olympics in Canada. They always due a tremendous job with coverage. Always live and mostly focused on the actual event and not endless fluff pieces that have little to do with the sport.
I hope CTV does as good a job with Vancouver 2010.

I loathe the Olympics. I hope the Beijing games are the nail in the coffin of this disgusting movement.

Re: Official Summer Olympics 2008 Thread
Lately, I've been rewatching opening ceremonies of past olympiad on youtube. I've also been watching winning bid announcements very frequently, it's just a shame they took down the Nagano announcement and that I can't find the announcement of Torino.
One of my favourite aspects of the Olympics is hearing all the different national anthems.
8AM Friday Aug 8 on the CBC can't come soon enough.
