Think you have to break it down into 2 different eras - older and newer.
For all-time, I think you have to go with Jim Brown.
Greatest Running back ever
Walter Payton
Jim Brown
Barry Sanders
Gale Sayers
Emmitt Smith
Bo Jackson
In addition to your choices. Not really sure about some of there total yards so I am just listing some others.
OJ Simpson - probably best of the later ones.
Eric Dickenson - better than Bo?
Hershel Walker - better than Bo?
Tony Dorsett - better than Emmitt above?
Franco Harris - not sure about his numbers but he was one of the great ones who helped win 4 Super Bowls.

only played 9 seasons and had 12,312 rushing yards. just think how many more he would have had if he played another 5 years. He'd probably be close to 20,000

Barry Sanders was surely the best running back I ever saw.
He was also the most entertaining athlete I've ever seen live as well, any sport.

I say Barry Sanders, but you could make the case for Walter Payton or Jim Brown also, Emmitt Smith is talented do not get me wrong, but was just on the right team at the right time.
I would just like to take this time as a Bengals fan to say that if Corey Dillion ran for all 16 games last year, he would have already have crossed the 10,000 mark and if a few more years left in him (at 30) would reach the top ten rushers of all time. My point I am trying to make, if the Bengals were a winning team then Dillion would be discussed as one of the greats.

Jim Brown hands down. He also played in the 12-game era. Think how many more yards he could get if he had 4 more games a year? He appeared to be way ahead of his time, and like Sanders, Jim Brown retired at the top of his game, but at an even younger age of 31.

Yeah, Tony Dorsett, Marcus Allen or even Thurman Thomas or more deserving to be on the poll than Bo Jackson. Just because he went 1st in the draft and had great potential doesn't mean he was the greatest. If Bo Jackson is on the list, then Terrell Davis should be on the list to, since he put up 7,500 yards in 4 seasons.

Barry Sanders for sure. He was the most amazing running back to watch. I really wish he had not retired in his prime. If he had not HE would be the all time leading rusher...without a doubt

I'm glad to see all the love for Barry Sanders. Whenever I hear this argument Sanders always comes right to mind. I never really got to see the others play so I might be a lil short-sided, but there was nothing like watching Barry Sanders run with the ball.

It really isn't even an argument. Sanders hands down.
Doesn't hurt that he left at the top of his game, blatently carried his team and was STILL unstoppable. Just hand it to him and watch him go.

I would rather have these statements be - the best that I ever saw.

Seeing him run in person or lots of game films / tapes
Knowing how the league, officals and other players at the time he played
How to compare the different styles of these 2 running backs
Browns game - how fast was he, how he played with the game on the line, was he a take charge guy
ETC.

As a Detroit fan, I'm a little biased toward Barry Sanders. I had the pleasure of seeing him play twice at the Silverdome. He had over 200 yards in one game against the Tampa Bay Bucs that I saw... it was simply amazing to watch.
Sanders was so classy... he was old school and very respectful of the game. He never made an ass out of himself. I always loved how after scoring a TD, he simply handed the ball to the official and ran to the sidelines. He acted like he'd been there a few times (and he had). Too many players make idiots out of themselves celebrating when they reach the end zone (I'm looking at you Terrell Owens!).
