I'm waiting for the DVD. So I can pause and vomit and then return later. I also don't want to spend over three hours in a theater watching a film that isn't good at all.

To be honest, Alexander isn't even a bad movie. I saw it in theatres and I'd give it a B. It is an extremely mixed bag, though. The aspects of the movie are either great or they are horrible, rarely there is something inbetween. Jolie and Hopkins are two of my favorite thespians, yet I did not like them in the movie. Hopkins role was unnecessary, Jolie, well, she just wasn't good.

On the other hand, Farrell and Kilmer were brilliant and if Farrell delivered the same performance in a highly-praised movie, he'd be nominated for an Oscar. The first battle scene is better than any battle scenes I have seen in Troy. Some really amazing effects and cinematography there. As for the screenplay..the dialogue is just like the rest of the film. Some lines are amazing, others are just embarassing. I also have to admit that the overwhelming homosexual undertone did bother me because I think they really overdid in hinting it. I mean if they really wanted to go for it, then go ahead, but don't spend the whole movie throwing out hints about Alexander being gay and whatnot.

The movie is a bit too long too, I must admit. By the end of it, however, I did not regret spending my money on it. It is nowhere close the best movies of last year, but it was worth seeing at least once.

Well I don't think I have time to catch it in theaters honestly. Will definately rent it though. Thanks for the info though Dr. L. Actually studied Alexander briefly in my last World History class during the fall semester. He really wasn't bi-sexual, but more gay, from what historians can discern. However, I doubt movie audiences would support such a notion (at least American audiences). Perhaps that aspect could have been toned down and focused more on the man rather then his controversial aspects. I don't mean to "white wash" the truth, but since there is not concrete proof he was bisexual or gay, then perhaps Oliver Stone could have found a better way to approach it?

I think that is exactly the reason why the movie failed in the end. It seemed as if Stone couldn't decide what he wants to focus on. You always get the feeling as if Stone pretends that the movie is focused on Alexander's achievements, but in fact he tries to shift the focus towards Alexander's sexuality. While the historical truth is truth, I don't think there was such a need to depict Alexander's love life whatsoever. Considering how much Alexander has achieved in his young age and how much he has changed the course of the entire world history, I am certain there were many other aspects Stone could have concentrated on. While the Gaugamela battle scene is amazing, it is way too short as is the set-up to it. It's like...Stone shows 70 minutes of Alexander's personal struggles, his relationship with his parents and his homosexual tendencies..then out of nowhere you have Alexander praparing for the battle and the battle taking place....all within 10 minutes.... That considerably brought down the movie. As for the technical aspects as art direction, effects, make-up, sound and cinematography, they all were brilliant.

Well, as I said I'll be seeing it on DVD. It is showing at the local discount theater but I really don't know if I want to journey there. I've got three others on my list for this week. If it is still showing there next week I may see it. Very small chance though.

EARLY INTERNATIONAL WEEKEND REPORT:


Alexander had another impressive weekend. Opening in Italy, the picture ranked first with a $3.874 million debut from 490 prints. The opening was 38% better than Gladiator and 62% better than King Arthur. In Brazil it also ranked first with $906,900 from 193 screens. The opening was on par with Gladiator and 43% better than King Arthur. The picture also opened at No. 1 in Bolivia, Central America, Chile, Colombia, Uruguay, and Venezeula.

With internet radio adds that stated, "Listen to the clips they tried to ban," UIP conjured up some controversy and business for Team America: World Police. In its U.K. premiere the puppet comedy grossed a surprising $2,838,339 from 327 screens. The number was in line with the result of South Park: Bigger, Longer, and Uncut in pounds sterling, but much higher in US$. However, Team America hadn't been opening on par with South Park in any markets, including the U.S. UIP's controversial advertising seemed to arose interest and it certainly peeked over the weekend.

Lemony Snicket's A Series of Unfortunate Events arrived in Mexico with moderate success. The family feature managed an O.K. $949,560 from 345 screens. That couldn't match The Princess Diaries, Cheaper by the Dozen, and Cats and Dogs. In a market where family pictures are the dominant ones, Lemony Snicket's debut is rather soft. Thanks to healthy runs in Europe, however, the Jim Carrey headliner has $45,817,581 to date.

Ray looks like it will have a very long run in Germany thanks to falling just 15% in its second weekend. That led to a $617,011 weekend gross from 130 screens for an 11-day tally of $1,687,673. Ray opened in neighboring Austria, grossing a sturdy $84,432 on 32 screens. Through just two weeks of international release Ray has amassed $1,772,105.

Ocean's Twelve grossed $9.641 million over the weekend from approximately 4,600 prints in 55 countries for a $152.2 million. The start-studded caper had one opening over the weekend in Poland. The picture finished in first place, grossing $487,400 from 65 prints. The opening was the 10th biggest ever for a WB film and outperformed Ocean's Eleven by 30% in local currency.

Domestic dud "Alexander" was the top movie at the foreign box office last weekend with estimated ticket sales of $14.5 million, while "The Incredibles," "Ocean's Twelve" and "National Treasure" also reported big numbers.

At the same time, major studios are beginning to open "Oscar Alley" for Academy Award contenders. And as the year-end big entries start to peter out, bookings are being found for a batch of other new offerings awaiting offshore exposure.

"Closer," the surprise winner of two Golden Globes Sunday, grabbed the limelight in the United Kingdom with a bow of $3 million (including previews). It also opened at No. 1 in Germany, German-speaking Switzerland, Austria and Israel. But Mexico greeted the Mike Nichols-directed film at No. 5. The weekend gross came to $6.9 million from eight countries.

"Aviator," which nabbed Globes for best drama and actor Sunday as well as a leading 14 British Film Academy nominations Monday, landed at No. 2 in Spain, with $2.2 million. The Martin Scorsese-directed film held strong at No. 4 in the U.K. where it has earned $5.8 million to date.

"Sideways," a Golden Globe winner for best comedy film, kicked off in Greece with $137,000. Other new openings over the weekend saw the Japanese hit "Howl's Moving Castle" take the No. 1 spot in France with $2.1 million; the French hit "A Very Long Engagement" debuted successfully in Holland and Norway to raise the international total to an estimated $39 million; and "Elektra" teed off in Australia with $1.3 million.

"Alexander" continued to make up for its domestic disaster, hacking its way to the top with an estimated $14.5 million weekend from 51 territories. The international total rose to $88 million, compared with its pallid $34 million domestic take. The film ranked No. 1 in Italy ($3.9 million) and Brazil ($906,900).

"Ocean's Twelve's" tireless swim brought in an estimated $9.6 million from 55 countries, hoisting the total to $152.2 million, with the United Kingdom and Japan still to come.

"The Incredibles"' incredible overseas journey hauled in $9.2 million from 46 markets to lift its total to a grand $334.8 million.

"National Treasure" went up to $119 million as it dug up another $8.9 million from 36 countries after No. 1 openings in Greece and Turkey.

But it doesn't have to. It has sold over 37 million DVD/Video units in North America. That would mean Shrek 2's overall profit is probably more than even ROTK.
