I liked it but think it's a bit overpraised. It's not really a comedy anymore, it's become more like a tragedy with some funny parts, at least towards the end of the second season and the special. Listening to the behind the scenes interviews by the writers, I realize how much the actors brought to it that I hadn't realized. The creators had envisioned the characters very differently before they cast the final actors (Tim was supposed to be a fat guy, Gareth was supposed to be an intimidating strong militaristic guy etc). The two guys who played Gareth and Tim will have good futures in decent roles I think, like how Mackenzie Crook (Gareth) had a nice little role in Pirates of the Caribbean. Gervais will probably continue to be popular in England but I doubt he'll make a mark over here. He's overly smug. |
