Re: Top ten television series of 2017
While considering my top ten, I want to highlight a few of the year in television's disappointments/misfires:
The most painful is Top of the Lake: China Girl, a belated, confused, and frequently inert follow-up to a masterful first season. I expected so much more from Jane Campion and Elisabeth Moss. It plays as a random of medley of observations on feminism and motherhood wanly disguised as a detective story, one with an uninteresting solution and an absurd amount of it's-a-small-world-after-all coincidences.
Bloodline, third and final season. A (at its best) supremely atmospheric and well-acted drama which never truly rediscovered its center after the death of Ben Mendelsohn's electrifying quasi-antagonist. This rushed, shrug-worthy conclusion has fleeting moments of intrigue and poignancy, but it uses its characters poorly and features myriad perplexing turns of events. One almost feels they should not have bothered.
The Last Man on Earth, season four. I still have significant affection for this series and its key players, but it is very badly treading water, and the characters' tics and interactions have grown stale. The promising involvement of Kristen Wiig went nowhere of note.
The Walking Dead, season eight. All-out war is an all-out bore. Death-by-baseball-bat-or-monologue Negan is no longer menacing so much as wearying and excruciating. The cyclical debates regarding mercy and morality in a post-apocalyptic world have never felt more redundant and repetitive. Fear the Walking Dead is a far superior and more nuanced series at this point.

I watch very little new TV, but I'll nominate one new show and one returning show that I did watch and enjoy:
The Orville Outlander

The Orville Outlander If you followed TV as closely as film, the amount of groupthink and anti-hype in TV critics nowadays might make your head explode
