David Chappelle enters Mental Institution, show cancelled
One of the most watched shows on cable, and Comedy Centrals #2 show behind South Park - The David Chappelle Show, has been held indefinately as the shows namesake, David Chappelle, has admitted himself into a mental institution.
The show is the best selling TV DVD in history, shifting over 2 million copies in America alone. It regularly scores 3.1 million viewers which beats even some of UPN and The WB's biggest rating shows.
There is no word as to when Chappelle will leave the institution, but Comedy Central have went to work on replacing his slot with other shows for the next season, Its likely that the show will return in 2006/7 depending on Chappelle's condition.

Yup, that deal happened, but its unlikely Chapelle got it all upfront.
Not 2 million a show as the deal included a tv movie and various other ancillairy tie ins, so it was more like 1.0 million an episode

Yes I meant that is how much he lost.
He really must have let something get to him or just snapped.

Comedy Central and Dave Chappelle Meet
http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20050608/ap_ ... _chappelle
NEW YORK - Comic Dave Chappelle has met with executives at Comedy Central for the first time since his unscheduled "spiritual retreat" in South Africa forced the suspension of the third season of his show.
Comedy Central President Doug Herzog met with Chappelle Friday in Los Angeles, network spokesman Tony Fox said.
Fox would not talk about what was discussed and when  or if  Chappelle would return to the network. A spokesman for Chappelle did not immediately return a call for comment.
Chappelle had two unannounced performances at a comedy club in Los Angeles last week. He has said he left for South Africa because he was unhappy with the direction of his show, which had been scheduled to start a third season on May 31, and denied reports of drug or mental problems.
Meanwhile, Comedy Central sold another 400,000 copies last week of its DVD of the show's second season, for a total of 1.4 million so far. The first season's DVD has sold 2.9 million copies, the biggest-selling DVD of a TV series of all time.

I think Dave is going to eventually come back to the show; Comedy Central will probably give into his demands since it's one of their most profitable shows. But if Dave permanently quits, he would have the record for biggest contract refused (the current record holder is Jerry Seinfeld, who rejected a $1.5 million per episode deal for a 10th season of Seinfeld).
