 I Am Cait
Did anyone watch?
I thought the premiere was very compelling and tastefully done. Coming from the same network as the Kardashians, I expected it to be not quite as sincere but things felt genuine, as far as reality TV can go.
Kylie's appearance felt forced, like "Oh hey Dad, I'm here now that there are cameras", but I was impressed with Kim. It was a nice, light moment.
I know some will be put off by this being associated with Kardashians, but I think the overall tone and meaning of the show is strong so far and they pulled off what is going to be an important series for everyone, transgender or those living with someone experiencing this.

 Re: I Am Cait
Zero interest in this. Not out of trans-phobia, but because it is an extension of the Kardashian brand.
I would be interested in a series detailing the transition of a person who does not live in a bubble of navel-gazing, diamond-encrusted reality-television excess.

No thanks (for the same reasons as David). Also, I find it kind of odd that Bruce Jenner was a national joke yet Caitlin Jenner is a national hero--for only that one reason, it seems.

 Re: I Am Cait
I totally understand that and I have the same reaction to anything Kardashian, but I still think this deserves attention for at least bringing a nationally-known figure (whether through his Olympic history or through his reality TV history) into a new light, a light that most are unfamiliar with.
It's a bit unfair to say "Well, I'd rather see someone without all the riches get their own show detailing their struggles being transgender". It's even more important for someone with money to do their part for their particular cause.

 Re: I Am Cait
I'm just not sure what makes anything about this person noteworthy. Again, aside from wanting to become a woman and living in the public life by choice there's not really much to it. I've always been open-minded about life so trans-people have never been a big source of "ooohh, look at that!" and if I were trans I think I'd be disappointed with the unofficial spokesperson--the way I, as a gay, am not the hugest fan of those flaming queers at parades and whatnot

Kind of like "Hey, if he can do this, so can I". To me, if it saves someone's life or allows someone to live openly and honestly, it's good. I don't think this is detrimental to the cause, with or without Kardashians in the shadows.

 Re: I Am Cait
I believe her status as an eccentric Kardashian supporting character has overshadowed her Olympic achievements in the collective cultural consciousness.
But of course no one can argue with, *cue violins* "I am proud to have watched I Am Cait if it saves JUST ONE LIFE."

There is the show I Am Jazz on TLC I believe which deals with an adolescent and her family dealing with a gender transition.

You can't expect David to actually TRY to find these things. He must be told about them.

 Re: I Am Cait
Several trans women appeared on tonight's episode and a few of them expressed the sentiment that Caitlyn doesn't have any of the same struggles as they do because of her social status/worth, which I think is certainly a fair criticism. As far as Caitlyn could go, there's always the question of how it would go without the money and the position in the media. But it's still a large exposure for their community.
Unfortunately for Caitlyn, tonight's episode also was a detriment to her because with so many "normal" transgender women, the Kardashian sheen was very evident. Trying to sum up certain things by reciting an article or essay she read felt very naive and sheltered.
