Jonathan Rhys Meyers to play Dracula for NBC
Quote: Jonathan Rhys Meyers will play Count Dracula in a TV series update of Bram Stoker’s late-1800s Gothic horror novel.
NBC has ordered 10 episodes of “Dracula,” which is being produced by NBC Universal through its Carnival Films & Television — the same people who bring you “Downton Abbey.”
NBC Entertainment Chairman Bob Greenblatt, who made the announcement, was head of Showtime when Meyers was cast to star in that pay-cable network’s “The Tudors.” On Tuesday, Greenblatt said the new series would bring a “Tudors” sensibility to the literary classic.
The show will not shoot a pilot but instead go straight to series. It’s set to start production this year; additional casting and production details will be announced later, and no target air date was announced.
The “cool, new version,” as Greenblatt described the series, introduces Dracula as he arrives in London, posing as an American entrepreneur who maintains that he wants to bring modern science to Victorian society.
In reality, Dracula hopes to wreak revenge on the people who ruined his life centuries earlier. There’s only one circumstance that can potentially thwart his plan: Dracula falls hopelessly in love with a woman who seems to be a reincarnation of his dead wife. http://www.washingtonpost.com/entertain ... story.htmlJonathan Rhys Meyers playing Dracula. Be still, my beating heart. I hope this is good (read: fun, sexy, campy, entertaining, atmospheric). The fact it will be on NBC is a tad troubling, but I'm very excited for now.

It doesn't look very good from the trailer.

This premieres on Friday. What would be a solid number for it in regard to ratings, based on its Friday time slot, the fact it is on NBC, etc.? Should the premiere draw at least 5 million viewers?

It should. Around the same time last year, Grimm was pulling 6+ million people. I feel Dracula should be able to do something similar.

Re: Jonathan Rhys Meyers to play Dracula for NBC
I enjoyed the pilot a lot. A few of the storyline elements are a bit too generic so far, but Rhys Meyers is electrifying as Dracula, and the production is beautiful on a technical level. And it is simply very entertaining and sexy.
Turning Dracula into a vengeance minded antihero would drive many of my former college peers up the wall, but I believe it is a fine conceit for this particular series.

I didn't know Katie McGrath was in this show! Suddenly watching 'Dracula' grows from maybe to a must-see!

Yes, she plays Lucy, so a fairly important role.

Re: Jonathan Rhys Meyers to play Dracula for NBC
I may be the only one watching this here, but I highly enjoy or even love it. Last night's episode was perhaps the best yet. This series' version of the Dracula/Renfield relationship is one of its finest attributes.
Since a second season is improbable, I hope the finale is not too open-ended.

I'd watch it, but I find it very frustrating to watch a show that will most likely be cancelled midway...

Re: Jonathan Rhys Meyers to play Dracula for NBC
I hear last night's mid-season finale saw a slight ratings boost. Which surely does not mean much, but I will celebrate it nonetheless.

Re: Jonathan Rhys Meyers to play Dracula for NBC
Only two episodes left. Perhaps forever considering the tepid ratings. I am still glad I watched, even if the season/series finale has a frustrating cliffhanger conclusion. This series is a blast, and I have come to love both the characters and the general atmosphere. A shame NBC did not put more muscle behind it.
