Luck (HBO)
Good show so far. Love the photography (those racing scenes!), tough-poetic dialogue, and superb performances from an ensemble rich with character actors.
Damn is it dense, though. I can't even pull the, "Eh, people who are too stupid should just go watch The Bachelorette" card here. Between the industry-specific lingo and opaque character motivations, it's a real challenge to follow. The pursuit feels worthy, though, so I'm in for as long as it runs.

I honestly thought the pilot was one of the most boring hours of television I've ever watched.

Not a big fan of Milch so will probably give this a miss, atleast until it has a couple of seasons under its belt.
Man this show is more boring than Treme. I think this show falls under shows critics love but people dont like at all. Thats disappointing for Michael Mann
Going to have to agree with David on this. I've only watched the first half of Episode 1 so far, but I'm really into it. Very narrow in its target audience though, so I get the boring comments.

This show is doing atrocious numbers, even worse than the incredibly low-rated "Treme" does. I feel like HBO had to pick up a second season due to the prestige of the project, but in no way is this a success for them. It's pulling like a 0.1 in the 18-49 demo and 500,000 viewers (in comparison, Showtime's "Shameless," which airs at the same time, regularly pulls in 0.8-1.0 in the demo).

premium cable shows dont care about demographic since they have no commercials at all but yeah the overall viewership is pretty low considering the budget of the show. I doubt they really would keep it for a second season considering the high salary for the cast. Its only chance for renewal is if it woul get boat loads of nominations at the emmys which even that isnt guaranted

Huh? A second season has already been confirmed. Chances are it won't see a third, though, sadly.

Its no surprise coming from the dream team of Mann and Milch, but this is brilliant television. Suggesting otherwise is the height of foolishness.
Haven't watched Episode 2 and 3 yet, but that pilot is entrancing.

Its the finest four-corners HBO pilot since maybe Deadwood and possibly The Sopranos.

Re: Luck (HBO)
This show is a slow burn, to be sure.
I understand why people had problems with the first episode; vernacular, subject, tons of accents and weird speech. But, it's also very Milch to do that.
I will say though, if you stick with it you will find yourself with one of the most rewarding viewing experiences in a while.
The race in episode 4 is the single best scene of anything I've seen in the 2011/2012 season.

Re: Luck (HBO)
A show being canceled due to "horse deaths" has gotta be one of the one most bizarre reasons in TV history. It's kind of sad that HBO doesn't reasonably think they could continue the show with the current safety practices in place.

Re: Luck (HBO)
Good god its cancelled if they were this reckless with animals. It doesnt help too that the ratings were low on the show and reviews while were good just werent up there with Homeland and Boardwalk Empire. I still doubt its being cancelled due to a few horse deaths but more to do with the ratings
They couldn't implement stronger, safer regulations instead? I smell HBO deciding to save money by cancelling the low-rated drama now. They were beyond stupid to renew the show before an episode ever aired.
And I loved the show. Really a shame about the horses and the show itself.

HBO's business model isn't really ratings-centric. It's about getting people to subscribe and a lot of that is by brand image management.

They were probably afraid of PETA protesting the network, which could cost them some subscriptions.

Re: Luck (HBO)
The new regime at HBO has been kind to its new shows of late and goes out of its way not to cancel things like the previous regime did (rome, deadwood etc). So this is a surprise. I think its a bit of both, limited audience and not animal friendly.
They wouldn't have been filming the second season if they were worried about ratings, though.

Re: Luck (HBO)
My impression is they are, to an extent, scared of the bad publicity the death of the horses could cause, but are more just using them as a scapegoat to jettison an expensive show which has proven very niche and is not a big water-cooler/subscriber-enticing word-of-mouth hit.
I hope this season ends with at least a bit of closure. I know not every conflict and tension will be resolved, but please don't let it be one of those, "Everything is building and building and building and...BOOM, credits, see everyone next season" finales. This show has, in its own quiet, brooding, elegant, macho way, blossomed into a real gem, so it would be nice if this one season could stand as a proper story well told and not be completely undermined by the abrupt cancellation of season two.
