Post Raising Hope (FOX) | Season 1

Image

The only new comedy this season that is of any interest to me. It looks funny and it comes from Greg Garcia, man behind My Name Is Earl (which was canceled to make room for rating bombs Kath & Kim, P&R, Community and to top it all it was and still is funnier than any single one of those shows). The first batch of reviews on Metacritic are all great even though there are only 4 the score looks to be very good (87/100 so far). I just can't wait to see it!

The first ten minutes felt a bit clunky, but once everything was set the last ten minutes were a complete riot. I probably haven't laughed that much at once scene (the one with the puke) in months. Hopefully this manages to survive somehow because it's definitely something I'd tune in.

Liking this show. It still has a few kinks but the premiere was pretty funny.

Best new TV show this fall for me.

Second episode was very funny with the rotten tooth girlfriend. The third episode though?! OMG. Cirrhosis of the River? Hahahaha. The only thing that I would say is holding the show back is the senile grandma due to her detachment from the rest of the family and Hope. I liked how the family used her to remove all the luxury items from the shack in the third episode though. If they keep using her like this, or if they include more moments of lucidness, it will feel like an ensemble cast rather than a ensemble cast with cameos of a mentally ill grandma.

I absolutely hate this show. Then again I also hated "My Name Is Earl" so I'm not too surprised.

Really good show. It has a few kinks it needs to work on but I'm positive it will all get sorted out. Every episode so far at least had a few hilarious moments.

Sorry jmovies you don't like it. And I'm sorry you don't like Earl. It's still way better than any comedy NBC has on air.

Uh-oh... I've seen some Earl repeats recently and I'm not the fan I thought I was.

I'll still give Hope a chance.

The third episode was very fun. The Istanbul (Not Constantinople) scene was great. I like when a show puts things like that together.

I loved the fourth episode. The family portrait thing was jut wild and I liked how in the end they got a perfect picture. So many laughs. This show has trashy, classy and cute humor all at the same time!

A pretty damn good first season. I loved the guest roles of Jaime Pressly and Ethan Suplee. Hopefully now that Jaime is on another FOX show they can get her back for an episode or a two again.

Season finale was one of the cutest episode any show had this season. It went back to "explain" a lot of character trades in the show. And I loved how they turned the tables with Jimmy and Sabrina.

I'm looking forward to the next season and I hope it can hold better in its new timeslot than multiple failed comedies have this season.

Yeah, this is a good show. Not amazing, but it's consistently pleasant and well-written. Also, Martha Plimpton and Garret Dillahunt are great.

I like this show, kind of a Married With Children with a little bit of Arrested Development thrown in.

Uhh, white trash dysfunctional family? There's not that many of them, and that were both on Fox. Fathers were both stars in there glory days, and their jobs aren't that different either, sons were extremely awkward with girls. I'm not saying its an exact match, but it seems like a much closer example as a hybrid of that with a Single Camera style show of today.

The atmosphere and the comedy type is completely different than that of MWC. MWC heavily relied on repeating jokes too and unlike Hope there was never a lesson to be learned. Also you're comparing characters but the ones in MWC were completely one dimensional and their sole intent was to amuse. With these characters in RH you can even identify at times and they evolve and become more real as we get to know them...

That they're both on FOX is a silly argument. Al hates his job, Burt loves his. Jimmy might be awkward with girls, but he not immediately cut off and ripped to shreds by them. It ain't even a similar situation. You're using tangential similarities at best.

THe characters on Raising Hope are completely one dimensional, thats insane to think otherwise. They haven't changed at all from the pilot to finale, sure there are some lessons but Married With Children taught lessons as well, whether it was for the audience or a character (even if just for an episode)

You're making this show to be much more than it actually is, and to really seem to downplay what Married With Children was about. And I love Married With Children, and really enjoy Raising Hope. If Raising hope can start going into social commentary and current issues it has a real shot of lasting a long while. Married With Children lasted 10 years and was nominated for 15 Golden Globes and Emmys. It was a very influential show on today's television.

All shows of today are influenced from other shows, Married With Children itself probably couldn't resist without All in the Family showing Working Class Americans.

The shows themselves are very similar, the fact that this version the parents love each other and enjoy the slumbers that they live in doesn't change the type of sitcom it is.

Nonsense. You are saying that a lizard and a bird are the same because they both hatched from an egg, when in fact they totally went their separate ways.

That thing you just said is ludicrous and in no way relates to what I said. I think it's hilarious that you can't see the striking similarities between the two shows. There is no argument, it's a fact. You obviously haven't watched MWC with your incorrect description of the show.

There both shows about White Trash Dysfunctional families trying to react to the world around them forcing their social morals onto them. Al Bundy was a much defiant character then the mother in this show, but as originally said Raising hope is no Married With Children on the edge or issues addressed.

I've seen every episode of MWC at least twice. Sure the first time I was pretty much a kid, but they had the show on heavy rotation 3-4 years ago. It aired every afternoon with a rerun next morning and then when the show finished they started airing the show again, in the same way from start to the end.

Not even once while watching RH did MWC popped in my head. I just can't comprehend that someone can view these shows as similar ones. Sure you found some similarities on the surface (the egg) but what makes these shows tick (inside the egg) is completely different.

All I said was it's like Married With Children revamped in a Post Arrested Development way. I'm not detracting the shows merit, but it really is the best comparison of the type of show it merged from.

But I am pretty surprised at your throw away description of Married With Children (Having seen 262 episodes twice) It's more than just surface, a lot of the themes addressed are similar as well.

Throw away description? MWC is hilarious. Sorry if you found my description as if I didn't like that show. Yes, themes addressed might be similar, but the way they're addressed are not the same. I'm still having trouble understanding where you come from. If you took an episode of MWC and an episode of RH and showed it to some guy without telling him anything and then asked him how similar these two shows are, he'd say not much. I'm sure of it.

Well lets come out of fantasy land for a second and think about that realistically, because you would definitely lose that. I've watched two random episodes of MWC today just to see if my argument still holds up. Other than the darker edge and and the sexual charge of MWC, it's very similar.

Even Buck the Dog is very close to the Baby in Raising Hope, and Maw Maw other than the age difference is a lot like Kelly Bundy

If they had a direct Antagonist like Marcy (Though the black couple has done that to some degree) it would be one of best comparisons ever) As said though there aren't that many shows comparable to Married With Children as its a hard genre to tackle.

Face it, Raising Hope is a watered down Married with Children with family morals brought back in. Fox simply is not the network MWC created anymore.

If I saw RH as a watered down version of MWC it would instantly mean an inferior show, which is not the case.

I see them both as different shows with their own merits that make them good.
