Post subject:  Dr. Lecter's TV Shows Summer Catch-Up - Update #15

Well, now that my primary TV entertainment, Lost, has finished its second season, I've got an entre summer to fill with catching up TV series I've always wanted to see or catch up on.

Some of them I heard are good. Others of them I started watching a while ago, but had to give up due to scheduling. Others I just stumbled upon coincidentially and they struck me as great.

In this thread I'll just post my random thoughts on series and episodes that I will watch during the summer.

These are the ones I plan to catch up on during the June - September period:

Veronica Mars, Season 2 (and finish Season 1)
House, M.D. Season 1
"24" Season 1
The Simpsons Season 1 & 2
The Shield Season 1-5
Invasion Season 1
Surface Season 1

So whoever's interested is always welcome to peek into the thread for my comments.

To start this off:

House, M.D. started airing here some weeks ago and while I missed the pilot (which I will get hold of soon), I watched the second and the third episodes and just loved them. I must say that I have never been into medical series. At all. But this one won me over from the very first moment. Why? Hugh Laurie. Amazing performance from what I see so far. Extremely funny and well-acted. The medical stuff is also pretty interesting, especially now that I partially know what they are talking about.

Don't bother with the early seasons of The Simpsons. The quality was greatly lacking back then.

Id switch the shield for Alias catchups, Lecter.

I am already the furthest ahead in Alias of those shows, though, having seen the first two seasons.

Huff-- from the beginning

Any more suggestions?

The Sheild is another over-rated show that I really liked for its first season, and even somewhat onwards before it suddenly began to become very formuliac and its characters stagnated in a major way.

Yes, and I was preparing to start getting into it this summer but keep giving it second thoughts. I'm intrigued by how the fans react to the show but there is still nothing that grabs me from the outside to peek in and watch. I'll probably check it out after I finish the ones I really want to see and if I enjoy it, I'll continue it.

@Christian: thanks! I knew there was another new cable show I wanted to watch but I couldn't remember what it was!

Update #1

Well, I'm five episodes into House and while I still enjoy it far more than I have ever enjoyed any medical series, the thing gets formulaic. Basically, this is the breakdown of each episode:

1. A new patient comes to the hospital
2. House is reluctant to treat him/her, thinks it's something casual
3. Turns out it's some rare unexplainable disease
4. House suggests some medication
5. Turns out he's wrong
6. Discusses it with Chase, Cameron and Foreman, usually all of them can't come up with some useful ideas
7. Patient almost dying by now
8. In the meantime, House's treating one or two other patients with some laughable symptoms that provide comic relief
9. House finds out the right medication and the original patient is healed

This is how it went every single time thus far.

The reason I keep watching it is the tremendous turn by Hugh Laurie. His one-liners are hilarious and the delivery is great. Hopefully the story will get me somewhere with other characters too, but as of now, it's usually worth watching for Laurie.

In other news, I got hold of the first season of The Shield. Can commence viewing today.

I read in a thread like this on Something Awful the advice to skip from about where you are in House to episode 20. I would go so far as to suggest skipping to 21. 21 is the best episode of House ever, and saved the season, which took a sharp downward turn when Vogler showed up. Also, when Cameron starts to be completely obvious about her crush on House. So you'd get to miss all of Vogler and the annoying House/Cameron stuff.

There are about 4 or 5 episodes that House breaks the formula.

Let us know what you think of "Three Stories" once you get to it. Also, the infamous "Vogler" episodes.

Well, unlike all other series I am catching up, I am watching House on TV, so I get a new episode each week and since I saw the fifth yesterday, it will take quite a while until I get to the 21st ;)

I just... don't get House. I find it very pedestrian.

For those who hadn't run into Hugh Laurie before House. It helps one appreciate how much he is acting in his current role.

Yes he's German but in the US they are running the first season of House on USA cable channel for the last few months, that's how I saw the first season, or most of it.
