I am in for some great stuff (I hope)
Well, I now started simultaneously watching The Wire, Homeland and The Sopranos. If all are as good as everyone says they are, I should be in for some great months ahead of me. I already love Tony Soprano...

Kind of a waste of money to let it sit there especially when HBO box sets are two and a half times more expensive than regular tv box sets.

You should quit watching Homeland immediately after season 2, episode 4. Think of it as the series finale

BTW, anyone watched the original Israeli Prisoners of War? I am six epsiodes into the Israeli series and five episodes into Homeland and while Homeland is quite good, the Israeli series is vastly better. So emotionally powerful.

I mean yes, the "running over old lady" sstoryline sucked beyond belief, but the season finale *almost* makes up for it. And watching Morena Baccarin naked is lways a plus.

The Sopranos is brilliant. Homeland not so much.

Re: I am in for some great stuff (I hope)
So far I perceive "Homeland" as decent, but not much above average. I wonder if two factors contributed to that - the original Israeli show that is just great and, more importantly, the fact that The Sopranos is just so much better that it makes everything else pale.

You shouldn't watch the original at the same time . Of course it's not going to seem that great then, especially if you watch the other one before this. Homeland is about the best thing on TV right now, IMO.

It is also not what you think. Aside from the basic premise and the very first episode, ther are no similarities whatsoever betwen Prisoners of War and Homeland. The latter is a thriller-show, akin to "24", the Israeli series is a drama, through and through with very little action or thriller elements (though they are some and they are extremely well-placed throughout). There are no real plot similarities after the first episode. Homeland (after five episodes) is good, but when I look at Breaking Bad's current season, it is worlds ahead.

HBO shows are extremely cheap here as well.
Soprano seasons after the 1st may vary in quality but ate still superb.

Have you started The Wire yet? I prefer it to The Sopranos. Have not watched Homeland.

Re: I am in for some great stuff (I hope)
Finished wiht the first season of The Sopranos.
It is sooo good. It's one of those shows that gets a lot of hype and ends up being THAT good. Can't remember the last time I loved the first season of a show this much. Certainly wasn't the case with Breaking Bad (which grew on me during its third season). James Gandolfini is perfect, beyond perfect as Tony Soprano. At least in the first season, there is no weak link. No bad character, no bad acting. Mix of humor and drama is top-notch. Astounding stuff.
Wrapping up season 1 of Homeland soon - solid stuff, but not as great or tense as mayn make it out to be. I guess watching it at the same time as Breaking Bad and The Sopranos just hurts it.

Re: I am in for some great stuff (I hope)
Good to hear. The first season of Sopranos is the best but I like the other seasons too.
I'm still stuck midway through Homeland Season 1 - will need to just finish it as I hear it gets better.

Think of it as the series finale Yeah, I couldn't even get through 20 minutes of S3 premiere before realizing how flat and mediocre it is now. If Lecter isn't even in love with S1 after it I would jump ship to Justified or Dexter or something. Present Homeland does poorly what those 2 shows do well and don't get enough credit for

Dump 'Homeland' for either 'Justified' or 'The Wire'.
