I know what you mean, Raffiki. What I loved about Season 4 was Sloane and Jack. They really did an exceptional job this season.

I think Season 3 was far to wrapped up in the Vaugn and Sydney relationship which was only ever designed to be a component to the show.
And Season 4 is about regaining focus - im loving season 4 ; its so exciting and probobly the most exhillirating yet. The thing i DO miss about the older seasons is that they had a lot more of a continous flow. Now its more of a kind of mission based thing; opening sequences never relate to former episodes; everything feels a little more modulated and thats not what the show is about.
One thing i really, really need the creators to do is start to bring what the hell Sloane's endgame is out. His character was far too much of a significant enemy for audiences to believe hes truly turned around - and whenever we start to they put him in mini-evil episodes where he takes "bad turns" and were reverted to certainty that rambaldi and sloane are still up to something.
What WOULD be awesome for season five would be if this new agent was actually a double agent sent to kill sydney. But keeps it hush hush as Sydney mentors her. I think if this double worked for sloane who could have been manipulating everyone all along it would be awesome and Alias would not only get back to what really made it great [the formula where sloane is the CLEAR enemy that Sydney is fighting] but it would have a host of interesting new enemies.
Ultimately i think the creators are putting too much faith in this idea that we care about all the characters in Alias when really - centrally, we only are concerned for Sydney.
Sydney has enough friends and fucked up family members - and no clear enemy.
Im also willing to debate that Alias is anything less than "something to note in television history". I for one will be pretty disgusted with ABC if they dump Alias after its fifth season. Alias was its only solid drama for three years and now it sprouts four at once and theres talk of cancellation? Thats pretty unfair. Those kind of desicions are what puts Alias under.

ABC is mad with power, thanks to their huge hits. Otherwise, Alias would be thriving for years. It's a sad swap, Alias for Lost and Desperate Housewives. All three are so great.

Well I can already imagine the mass petitions if Alias does go this year;
But on the bright side new contracts being made right now for certain crew members and new writers span at least two more years.
We are all worried right now; but Abrams has really yet to let me down...

The worst case scenario, moreso than the series ending, is the series going on without Jennifer Garner.

You're right; that would actually tarnish how great the show is.
Alias' problem is that it set some jaw-droppingly huge standards with its first two seasons; and for various reasons derailed in its third year - season four introduced back the amazing elements that made me love the show so and im ADORING it; but whats missing is the plotlines that span the series - those were partially lost in season 3 to try and attract new viewers. They seemed to have returned mid-season 4 - but i can only hope season five has the whole plot integrated to a massive arc.

I think Jennifer Garner may contemplate ending her Alias run after this season anyway, because they're bringing on new actresses to test the waters, and if it goes well (ratings-wise), it may come back, but without Garner. It would suck, and I don't think the show could survive without her.

I wouldn't worry too much if I were you.
As long as ALIAS is here, JEnnifer Garner will be there with it. She is vastly devoted to the show and even if she happens to leave on her own, ABC will immediately or soon thereafter, pull the plug.
You can't have ALIAS without Jennifer Garner, it just won't happen; so you might as well stop talking about it.
Edit: I just read my post and sorry if I sounded rude!

If abc has any intentions at all to make ALIAS work on Thursdays at 8, it should start repeating the 4th season, probably 2 episodes a night, 8-10pm on Thursdays because people won't catch Season 4 on DVD till after Season 5 starts, another reason why Season 5 will not do good.
Sort of like what FOX is doing with Arrested Devlopment. I just converted and wouldn't have watched Season 3 cuz Season 2 DVD won't be out for a while. They're showing Season 2 in 2 hour block marathons every Friday. Now they have gained a viewer (though technically I don't matter cuz I don't have a Nielson tracking system on my TV).
I never understood why networks (especially ABC) never repeated shows that did not do so hot during the season in summer. If they want the show to gain viewers they have to expose it to as many people as possible. By not putting on the air between season, the only change will be a loss in viewers!
It's all wishful thinking anyway, since it's about too late to start that now!

SPOILERS HIGHLIGHT:
By theINSIDER‘s Marc S. Malkin
Can "Alias" survive without its leading lady, JENNIFER GARNER? Producers are hopeful. Source tells me that Garner has made it clear that she probably won‘t be returning to the show next year for a sixth season. Producers are apparently betting on this season‘s new co-star, RACHEL NICHOLS, to save the hit series. She plays a new spy being trained by Garner. If she‘s a hit, they‘re looking to make her the show‘s next star. Garner‘s rep didn‘t comment. An "Alias" rep says,"I haven‘t heard that so I can‘t confirm that."

The bigger risk is not repeating it, alienating ALL hope whatsoever for an increase in audience come season 5, especially with the season 4 dvd not being released until after s5 has started.
I mean, they only have less than a handful of successful shows over the summer, all the rest and all the repeats have been HORRIBLE. What really have they got to lose? They're already near the bottom in the summer, either #3 or #4 overall, with its big hit Dancing with the Stars and modest hit, Brat Camp!

I can remember Alias only repeating one season on ABC Family.
