Entertainment One has completed a co-development deal with Avi Lerner and Nu Image to develop and produce a TV series based on action film “Rambo.”

Sylvester Stallone, who starred in the “Rambo” film franchise in the ’80s, is in negotiations to be involved with the “Rambo” TV skein on a creative level as well as potentially reprising his role as the original John Rambo. Stallone has remarked to the press repeatedly in recent years that he is interested in reviving the franchise and character.

“Rambo” films, based on David Morrell’s novel “First Blood,” center on a troubled Vietnam War vet and former Green Beret who is skilled in aspects of survival, weaponry, hand-to-hand combat and guerrilla warfare. Franchise launched four films over two and a half decades.

Under the eOne and Nu Image deal, the partners will develop the series and shop to networks Stateside and abroad.

This is a...strange story. Even if he is no longer an absolute top film star (though Escape Plan and Grudge Match may improve his fortunes in this regard before the year's end), I have a hard time imagining him headlining a television series, at least not one where he is playing Rambo. I could see him in a hard-boiled crime drama at AMC, FX, or HBO, but Rambo: The Series? Where Rambo, I don't know, goes on 50-minute jungle adventures every Thursday night at ten? I cannot wrap my head around it. At the same time, casting another actor as Rambo is not a very enticing proposition. Even if they found an actor with bad-ass credibility (such as, say, Ray Stevenson), the role and Stallone are so, so intertwined. Rambo is popular because of how Stallone perfectly plays him, not because he is such a fascinating and rich character in and of himself. He is not Batman or James Bond.

I'm sure it'll fade off with the Beverly Hills Cop TV series to the Afterlife for Lost Film-to-TV Adaptations, but if it did make it to air, it wouldn't make TV until, at the earliest, fall 2014. No TV network is going to invest in such a project with a 68-year-old star. No offense to Sly, he would be great in an AMC series.

I have always thought he could shine if cast an aging, conflicted gangster (or beat cop) in a serious drama, whether in a film or on television. A role which finds a way to play with and draw upon his iconic masculine image within a more serious, thoughtful context. He can act beyond being cool and macho, as proven by First Blood, F.I.S.T., Cop Land, and a few others.

And again, he's not getting younger. He has, what, one more Expendables? Then what? Someone has to tell these aging actors that cable dramas are the new film.

I'm not sure its about needing money (he cleared 15 off of EX2)

I'm actually surprised it wasn't pitched earlier. It'd be an interesting idea, only if they do a lot of different things. Not just rescue missions, a show about Rambo trying to reintegrate himself into America could have the awesomeness of a Walker Texas Ranger type show.

But I'd want this on Showtime or HBO to maintain the violence the series is known for.

Who said he needed money? ;)

And Walker, Texas Ranger is a piece of shit beyond its unintentional hilarity. ("Walker told me I have AIDS!") Though I do agree I would prefer a hypothetical Rambo series on a channel such as HBO or Showtime, though the concept would be more at home as a lower budget series on Cinemax.

Don't knock Walker. Before Conan came around, and the aura of Norris' myth grew, it was considered a very popular show, especially with older audiences as it was a very moral centric show. It was 90s CBS Camp at it's finest. It never once fell below 10 million viewers during it's 8 seasons

Popularity does not equal quality. It is not Good Television in any way, shape, or form beyond its camp value.

Sly is not involved in this apart from, maybe, a producer credit. Apparently it will focus on his early years, so it'll act like a prequel. Ugh. I won't watch this shit.

I hope this dies a death soon. This is one of the worst ideas in history.

I don't know, take away all of the Rambo aspects, and just name it something else, a special forces tv show about Vietnam could be awesome.

Maybe Stallone can bookend each episode like the Indiana Jones Chronicles.

Fox is suiting up for a reboot of “Rambo,” ordering a script for a one-hour drama based on the iconic Sylvester Stallone film franchise.

The long-gestating project, which is executive produced by Stallone and Avi Lerner, plans to pay homage to the movies. Titled “Rambo: New Blood,” it will explore the complex relationship between Rambo and his son, J.R., an ex-Navy SEAL.

Deadline suggests that Stallone might reprise his role of the former Green Beret on screen, although sources tell Variety that nothing has officially been decided.

Stallone is at work on his fifth “Rambo” movie, titled “Rambo: Last Blood.” He also currently appears as another one of his famous characters, Rocky Balboa, opposite Michael B. Jordan in the Ryan Coolger-directed “Creed.”

This sounds fucking awful, and I hope it never takes off.

Sounds great.Adding a son really did wonders for Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull and A Good Day to Die Hard. I really really hope they will have John Wick find his son in John Wick 2 because that's the only way they can improve...

They should go the Creed way and make it the Trautman's son.

Or...just do nothing, and make the inevitable Last Blood the last time we see Rambo.

Id cancel it completely. Stallone has some real heat from creed and should really move towards drama. Both another expendable and Rambo is just a setback now. Stallone is gonna be 70. He has some better opportunities if he doesn't fall back
