TV shows are being much more generously reviewed than movies
I noticed this trend on RottenTomatoes. So many series are gettign incredibly positive reviews: Daredevil - 98% http://www.rottentomatoes.com/tv/daredevil/s01/The 100 Season 2 - 100% http://www.rottentomatoes.com/tv/the-100/s02/Sleepy Hollow Season 2 - 100% http://www.rottentomatoes.com/tv/sleepy-hollow/s02/Arrow Season 3 - 100% http://www.rottentomatoes.com/tv/arrow/s03/And so on... It's hard to find many series below 80% and most get average grades above 8/10.

Thats why you use metacritic to gauge tv shows. It tells a different story too. I would also base it on first seasons since you normally get over 25 reviews rather like less than a dozen for sophomore seasons. Of course the exceptions would be when later seasons receive more than two dozen reviews.

They don't get as many reviews, but they also have more time to convince the viewer that they are good. Even if they don't like Ep 1, likeliness is if they stick through the whole season, thay will find something to appreciate.

Yeah even though MC's reviews are usually only after the critic has seen the first few episodes I think, still paints a reasonable picture of where critics are at with shows.

Even at MC, though, shows are still generally better reiewed than movies. There are not a whole lot of low scores.

TV critics don't matter at all. The days of someone picking up a TV guide subscription are over. Another 5 years, I bet it will almost be completely audience based reviews that you can compare to other shows you like.

I am not sure I agree. Particularly with social media, I still believe there is a sizable audience for A.V. Club/EW/etc.-type articles instantly criticizing/praising/analyzing/deconstructing the latest episode of a series. Or maybe my perception is just skewed.

The trend also applies to IMDB user ratings.
The reason zwackerm gave for this phenomenon seems plausible. In general, you get a lot more fans giving ratings for a tv series than for a movie. And critics are inclined to appease fans.

Speaking of IMDB reviews, this is a nice site: http://graphtv.kevinformatics.com

It's awesome, thanks. The graph for "Heroes" is hilarious.

Yeah the Sopranos has the same thing with S4 so I wonder if imdb has a glitch or if there was a troll attack or something

Shack wrote: Yeah the Sopranos has the same thing with S4 so I wonder if Imdb has a glitch Yeah because no way S4 of The Shield was significantly worse than the third. In fact, it was pretty awesome. But the website makes addicted. I now tested over 20 series. I am surprised that "Lost" was actually pretty stable throughout. I guess despite all the haters, it retained tons of ardent fans until the very end. Dexter's decline at the end is just, wow...at least Heroes declined steadily after S1. Was the final season THAT bad?

Re: TV shows are being much more generously reviewed than mo
I thought the Colin Hanks S6 was the low point of the series, but the final season got a ton of public hate, memes, etc. probably because of it being the final season and critics like the AV Club were ripping its asshole apart.

Breaking Bad's graph is admirable too of course. TWD is surprisingly consistent.

Re: TV shows are being much more generously reviewed than mo
That is true. I watch a lot of TV as well and there are few shows that I outright dislike.
Maybe because I'd rather give a movie a try that looks bad/unappealing (and end up disliking it), then doing the same with a TV shows that looks unappealing.
