Netflix developing a live-action THE LEGEND OF ZELDA TV Show
BREAKING: Netflix and Nintendo are developing a live-action The Legend of Zelda TV series Quote: The Wall Street Journal brings word today that Netflix is working closely with Nintendo to develop a live-action version of the classic game series “The Legend of Zelda.” The outlet reports that the series is being described as “Game of Thrones” for a family audience.
Netflix has begun searching for a writer on the project, which is said to still be in very early days. In addition, as WSJ notes, the project could never go far given Nintendo’s strict protection of adaptations of their properties. Check back here for further details on the series as we learn them.
First debuting for the Nintendo Entertainment System in 1986, The Legend of Zelda has gone on to produce over twenty games and win countless awards. The latest version of the game is currently in development for the Wii U and targeting a release later this year.
An animated series was produced in 1989, with a limited run of comics in the mid ’90s, but the series has yet to be adapted into live-action save for an April Fool’s Day video by IGN almost seven years ago.

But this is live-action. It does lend itself to animation, but only if it's made by the right people and for a wider audience, not just kids.
I'm surprised no one has attempted to do this before, given the Lord of the Rings, The Hobbit and Game of Thrones. Video games really do have a negative stigma in film and television.
Of course if the budget isn't there, it's going to suffer.

This can't end well. But then again, Netflix has a pretty great track record so far...

Does anyone watch Marco Polo? I haven't, but it seems like the closest idea we have to what kind of budget this will have from Netflix.

Don't forget that they gave us dreadful shows like Hemlock Grove and Marco Polo. Anyhow Zelda is a waste of their resource because it will turn out as badly as the Super Mario Brother movie

I'm intrigued, and excited, but so much can go wrong. I'm really surprised Nintendo agreed (or maybe proposed) to this.
Eiji Aonuma will hopefully be involved with it.
And interestingly, Netflix recently announced they'll be launching in Japan in the Fall, too. Japan hasn't embraced streaming, or the whole digital market, much outside of their own services, so we'll see how that goes.

As a huge Zelda fanboy, this idea terrifies me. A Zelda story is best told through the video game format, so we'll see how a linear storyline goes.
