I'm a little peeved that the manufacturers can't get their act together long enough to agree on standards...
Why wasn't the 70mm format designed in to the blu-ray standard as a lossless option for releases while allowing us consumers to choose between 16:9 or wider format screens?

Not going to happen. The TV market already made the long and expensive transition to 16:9. They're not doing it again.
