Post Re: Weekly Manga Sales 2021
I guess it'll boost both but the volume 0 must sells better than the rest.
Looking to shoseki ranking Jack Sparrow is right, the boost already comes at december 22th so backlogs should be strong when volume 18 release. With 2 days of selling this week it'll be hard to hit 1M with vol 18 alone but lets see how far the hype can goes ! Looking to the movie pre-sale it's really possible.

Edit : Thanks Corpse !

Volume 18*, Kenji 26. :P

The Saturday release is interesting. In the box-office thread, I said it might be due to them wanting to avoid it clashing with the release of the movie? Some people only buy/follow along as the volumes themselves come out, so if a sizable number of them bought the volume on Friday to read it, they may have waited a day to watch the movie, perhaps? And they were really pushing the Friday release date for the movie. Just speculating.

Still annoyed that Volume 0 doesn't count as part of the main series, thus its sales are separated. It would have added almost 2 million in sales to the main series for 2021. (I understand... but I still find it silly.)

Nice to see Tokyo Revengers #25 get above 500,000! First volume in the series to do so, right?

And I don't know anything about what No. 26 on this week's rankings is about, but that title is a question I have to use almost every day anymore it seems. I can relate.

Has anyone here read Kaiju No. 8? Got some gift cards to use from Xmas and figure I'll add some more to my manga collection by adding a new series. Volume 1 was just released in the U.S., and if its anything like the first and other early volumes of more recent series' to launch, then once the initial print run sells out, it'll become very difficult to get them due to the paper shortages/supply issues.

Chainsaw Man #1 has been out of stock in the U.S. for almost a full year. I managed to "buy" a copy back in March, but my package was LOST in transit... Not going to pay 50-100% more for it from scalpers, so I'll continue to wait before starting it.

And Tokyo Revengers, perhaps surprisingly, hasn't been released in print yet? Figured Kodansha would have been on this by this point, especially with AOT finished.

You can try out the first 3 chapters of Kaiju No. 8 on mangaplus (https://mangaplus.shueisha.co.jp/titles/100110), to see if it fits you.

I'd need to check exactly, but Chainsaw Man v1 has sold like 100k units in 2021 in the US (BookScan data) and is regularly among the best-sellers. Yet, I still see a lot of people complain about stock issues for it specifically. Hard to say if the demand is just freaking huge or if scalpers really are ruining it for everyone. Probably both tbh. Don't lose hope!

As for Tokyo Revengers, Kodansha isn't actually the one publishing it in print in English, surprisingly. Seven Seas will release the manga in May 2022 in an omnibus (2 in 1) format. So look forward to that I guess.

All chapters for it are currently free. I checked a few other series and just the first and last 3 chapters are free like normal, so I guess Kaiju is part of a current promotion?

I read the first 3. Wasn't expecting this much humor. And that's... awesome! Without any knowledge of the series outside of a couple volume covers, I was expecting it to be really serious. I'm sure it'll have its serious moments, obviously, but the humor is nice so far. I'll buy the first volume. Thanks for linking me the MangaPlus page.

I check periodically on Chainsaw Man. One day, I hope O see that "Add to cart" button somewhere. It's very much like Jujutsu Kaisen 0 and a couple of the early volumes around this time last year. But I think Chainsaw Man might surpass them in sold out longevity soon.

Very strange about Tokyo Revengers. Would have certainly been a big seller in the States (and likely many markets) for Kodansha. Seven Seas doing omnibus releases over individual is also annoying (I prefer individual). And assuming it's popular outside Japan too, that cuts into profitability as well.

Good thing I purchased Kaiju No. 8 #1 yesterday. Out of stock at RightStufAnime, Wal-Mart, Target, and in store at my nearest bookstores. Still available online at Amazon and Barnes & Noble, but probably not much longer.

Now just have to hope the package doesn't get lost in transit like Chainsaw Man #1 did...

Might as well mention it here
But Kaiju No. 8 #1 sold over 10k units in its first week in the US. I think this is the highest first week for a volume 1 ever, and probably by a lot. Tried to check as far back as I could. I don't have an official confirmation, but there is virtually no chance any other new release ever sold more.

Sounds likely. Can't really think of another possibility since the majority of series' are decently along in their volume releases in the U.S. (even Japan, though we've seen some buck that old trend in recent years) before they become popular.

And manga wasn't nearly as popular as it is today versus just a few short years ago in the U.S. The manga section in bookstores used to be far in the back, typically out of view. But now the latest volumes of various series' are upfront on the new or bestsellers tables, and the manga sections themselves are much, much closer to storefronts. They're also eclipsing U.S. comic book sales in the U.S. itself now as well.

Strong number for 2 days (789,000 with the LE) for JJK #18. Presumably would have done 1 million with a regular 3-day release. And the movie is providing the boost for the backlog. Might receive a bigger bump this week. Looks like #0 may outsell #1?

What's the reason for the big jump for Haikyu!!? Just a year-end sales bump?

Yeah, just the usual great December numbers (that are especially striking with already popular series), see also : Tokyo Revengers, My Hero Academia

Are you ready to see so many backlogs on next top 50 ? Vol #0 is out selling #1 off courses ! It looks #17 is the only one doing better (and #18 off courses ^^).
DS seems to have a little boost too for the past 2 days... Wait and see...

JJK should be 1.3-1.4M this week. Thinking ~650-700k for both backlog and new volume week2. Looking at what can realistically blow up this year 2022 crown feels almost certain unless a dark horse with a lot of volumes goes big.

JustLurking probably counted volume 0 (which is counted, annoyingly, separately). It's still an increase over last week regardless, which is quite rare after a new volume debuts (even if it was just a 2 day debut).

He wasn't
And considering the backlog, volume 18 100% is down from last week.
The older volumes are the reason for the higher total (first full week since the movie release)

Nah I didn't, just overshot a bit. Looking at shoseki (though it could just be off, it's not that uncommon) I would say backlog shouldn't be less than 600k, so it's probably on the new volume where I went too high. I was thinking movie hype would push the volume towards v16 numbers but it'll probably just have a decent increase from last volume instead.

It seems vol #0 sold less than 70k regarding to top 10 by series... guess not too far as it's 4th on weekly Shoseki ranking and vol #17 at 2nd.
Great hold for Kaiju no. 8 and curiously its backlogs look to sell very well lately.
KnY approach the 1M bar. It can surpass with next weekly chart but still too short maybe.

Yeah, backlog was pretty much where I thought it'd be, just overshot on the volume I guess.
