This was actually not the case, everything was just extremely low this week.

MHA has sold around 3.6M around now since the 50M circulation

2.1M in france in this year

1M-1.5M likely in US as well.

+700k first print for volume 33

I can see a jump to 60 million circulation in Jan 2022

Yes, perfect way to celebrate Volume 100 for Detective Conan with a #1 debut for the volume and series.

Sales in general have been a little "low" the last two weeks. I wonder if it's widespread stock issues either due to printing or shipping problems (read recently about how the print/paper issues are becoming more of a worldwide problem lately), or if the string of big weeks sort of deflated these recent weeks.

In the U.S., it's not usually difficult to get a copy of the most recent volume (or one or two back) if you pre-order or buy them a few weeks after release, but it's been very, very difficult to get any of the backlog volumes for a number of the more popular series' going on a full year now. The first three or four volumes of Chainsaw Man, same with Spy x Family, and the earlier volumes (usually 1-7, and 0) of Jujutsu Kaisen, and some scattered earlier volumes of other series' are very rarely in stock anywhere. My Hero Academia is the biggest seller in the U.S., has been for a few years now, so they seem to have the print numbers for it mostly under control since it was an established big seller prior to COVID and all the print and shipping issues. But anything that either started coming out in the U.S. around 2019 or became popular around then or afterwards has constant issues staying in stock.

Spy x Family will have a TV anime adaptation in 2022 by WIT Studio and CloverWorks Studio
https://twitter.com/WSJ_manga/status/14 ... 99810?s=20
This series is the most potential candidate to attract a broader audience demographics like what Kimetsu did.
I really like this series since its beginning; however, I feel that Endo has gotten the series off the track for several months. The initial goal of the story was abandoned over 10 chapters ago and Endo took frequent breaks due to illustrating for the first light novel. Hence, it loses its massive momentum since the end of 2020.

It's too late for KNY to turn the tide at this moment. Let's see if Red Light District Arc can boost KNY in 2022.

It is unfortunate for Gotouge to miss a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to hold the crown for three continuous years in Oricon history as a newbie. Years from now, when looking back, it will be a painful regret. Even though Kimetsu can keep the record of the highest second position in Oricon history, people may only remember the first position when they google. In contrast, it is amazing that One Piece was able to hold the crown over a decade before being dethroned.

Eh... even at just 2 consecutive years, KnY/Gotouge is only the second series/mangaka to ever top the Oricon year twice. One Piece/Oda, of course, being the first with 11 consecutive years. One Piece probably had a few years prior to Oricon's records, too.

So, still a notable accomplishment. And if KnY hadn't ended and was still ongoing, no doubt it'd have topped many more years for as long as it was still active. And 2020's astronomical sales record is never going to be challenge, let alone beaten.

Yeah I don't think they regret it because it was artistic choice to stop the manga looong back, what they are getting now is just now is unbelievable.

The regret I mentioned is not about how Gotouge decided to end the manga with their choice, but it is about the unaligned boost between the anime and the manga sales. If Red Light District Arc had aired on October 10th instead of December 5th, the series would have had enough momentum to turn the tide in 2021.

If the sales are still there getting these small records aren't even in their minds when they plan production of different media streams. Movie records are something important for studios but this record when OP has this locked up for many more years won't even be in their radar.

Post Re: Weekly Manga Sales 2021
Winning Oricon (and series one at that) is pretty irrelevant in the scope of long term planning for a huge series so...more that they don't regret it, I doubt it is even in their minds? Like, the manga is insanely big, yes, but as a media it is over and the real money is in the merch, collaboration deals and the likes for which "winning oricon series" really doesn't change anything.

Even moreso when the manga isn't pumping out volumes anymore, which means...it wasn't gonna hold it either way? It might have mattered if it was about setting up a streak, but KnY realistically has 0 chance of winning next year. It's a very different situation from One Piece (which won most years just off how strong its new volume releases were compared to everything else's, and so would KnY if it...actually still had releases - the standard 4 volumes a year instead of 1 would've added ~16 million to its number, assuming they sold like the average KnY volume).

This is more of a fan thing to get hung up over than something a company like Aniplex would care about in their management of a franchise as big as this.

I doubt that. Even if Spy x Family was to enjoy a huge boost (say it doubled its current sales and became a 2M seller), with only 8 volumes out and likely only 2 releases next year, that would "only" total 12M sales, which is...very strong, no doubt, and can win some years, but it's hard to tell if next year is going to be one of those. And this is a one of the best case scenarios for SxF, since I assumed a huge boost - boosts this big don't come around often, and it is pretty likely that its boost will be weaker than that.

CSM is in...a sort of similar situation, really. It has a few more volumes, which is good, but its releases are uncertain - we don't know when the manga is coming back, under what schedule, and even more importantly we don't know if part 2 will reset its volume count - if it does, all its new releases will be separated on oricon. Though it does have the upside of having much lower LTD sales for its volumes, which is important, since it gives much more room for backlog sales to bolster its numbers even with an inferior boost compared to SxF - ironically enough, being bigger is a disadvantage as far as this conversation is concerned.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

As for the conversation about next year is concerned - I remember mentioning AoAshi as an (unlikely) dark horse for the year. I saw AoAshi will be adapted by IG next year. That's a very experienced studio, known for fantastic spokon adaptations - kuroko no basket and haikyu were both under them, and both enjoyed huge boosts, becoming the two biggest spokon manga of the last decade.

This isn't to say I expect AoAshi to follow - its pre-anime sales are much weaker than both, and it doesnt have the same momentum. This adaptation honestly comes really late, and I'd be surprised if it became anywhere near as big as those two. However, and this is important - it doesn't really have to, as it currently has a massive 25 (soon to be 26) volumes to draw backlog sales from, with 4 more releases likely to come next year. So if it was to get a sizable boost, even if a much weaker one than kuroko no basket or haikyu, it's entirely possible that it could have huge series sales just off how many volumes it has to draw from.

I feel like the chances for this series to receive a great boost have increased knowing what studio is working on it. Which isn't to say I think it's one of the favorites for next year, its chances to receive a big boost are very much still up in the air, however...if it does get a big boost, then it would be a pretty strong contender for it.
