10/10 -> A

I love this album. I think it was bashed without any real reason and it's an underrated gem im Madonna's discography.

I's even rate it as Madonna's best.

Definitely Madonna's most underrated album. It did need more production on some of the tracks, but overall there are some great moments on this album: Nothing Fails, Love Profusion, Nobody Knows Me; Intervention - all of which were overshadowed by the mediocre first single (American Life). B+

Someone on these boards said (I think it was Raffi) that the album basically starts with Love Profusion and ends with X-Static Process. I definitely agree with that assessment. Everything that comes before and after is mostly a miss.

On the whole, I think it's one of Madonna's weakest albums. The production is fascinating and beautiful, and there are some real hidden gems in the middle, but a lot of it is hampered by Madonna's heavy handed songwriting. The lyrics are pretty convoluted and conceited in some parts; banal in others.

But yeah, I'll give it props for being ambitious.
