 Repealing Don't Ask Don't Tell
Obama won't go after marriage rights for gays, but he wants to make sure they have the right to fight in the armed forces! I guess it's a start?

Re: Repealing Don't Ask Don't Tell
lol Obama can try doing but he would just shoot himself in the foot and would just allow the Republicans to walk into office.
He is better off hoping the supreme court allows it. It is how it happened here in Canada.

It's a start, yes. It's certainly more than any other President has ever done, even though it's not enough.

It just rings so hypocritical to me ... "You can serve your country and uphold it's values as who you are, because we acknowledge that you're an equal regardless of your sexual orientation. Oh, but you still can't have the same protection under the law ... sorry. Enjoy Iraq!"

Still, it's more than we would have gotten under McCain/Palin. It's a step in the right direction, at least.

There is no point in talking about the ideal when it comes to American Politics...

Re: Repealing Don't Ask Don't Tell
True, but many forces are working against him... Young people and Blacks love Obama and cannot believe anyone can disagree with him. They will wrongfully assume he will win again and will not come out in record numbers in the next election. I think anger from the right and independents will drive a huge turnout. If you take Bush's vote in 2004 and Obama's in 2008, which was 62.5 million and 69.5 million. Add in some for one side and minus some from the other and you got yourself a close race in 2012!!!!!!!

The Repubs would need a good candidate... which they won't have.

Re: Repealing Don't Ask Don't Tell
That is true...
But there are 2 years left and politics is unpredictable.
Next election is going to be bitter, racism will play a huge factor. All I am saying who ever thinks Obama will coast to a reelection is fooling themselves.

Re: Repealing Don't Ask Don't Tell
Yeah, because racism wasn't a factor in 2008.
The Democrats are energized after Brown won in MA. Whether it has legs into the fall, who knows. But 2012 can't be predicted yet. Try 2010.

Re: Repealing Don't Ask Don't Tell
Obama has to do it now because Congress will be going red very shortly and the chance will be lost. For him to play the waiting game with a Democratic majority in Congress is to refuse to act on the matter and I think he means it that way, just like marijuana.

Quote: The compromise was finalized in meetings Monday at the White House and on Capitol Hill. Lawmakers will now, within days, vote on amendments that would repeal the Clinton-era policy, with a provision ensuring that any change would not take effect until after the Pentagon completes a study about its impact on troops. That study is due to Congress by Dec. 1.
In a letter to lawmakers pushing for a legislative repeal, White House budget director Peter Orszag wrote Monday that the administration "supports the proposed amendment."
"Such an approach recognizes the critical need to allow our military and their families the full opportunity to inform and shape the implementation process through a thorough understanding of their concerns, insights and suggestions," he wrote. http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2010/0524AR2010052403681.html?hpid=topnews

Congress isn't going red if the Reps continue shooting themselves in the foot.

The GOP will gain some seats in November -- the opposing party always does -- but there is no way they will get enough to take the House or the Senate.

Well, they cannot overtake the Senate - there are simply not enough seats in play - but House could be doable. Theoretically? Sure. Practically? No. They're behind in the "generic" polls, the GOP name brand is about 10 points behind the Democratic one (which isn't saying much since both are bad), and they keep nominating tea party extremists who can't appeal to the center. They've even lost the last four special elections, including two in very conservative areas. the only GOP win in the last year has been (the moderate) Brown in Massachusetts running against an absolutely terrible candidate.

They just need a few more Rand Paul-style goofs, and some violence that I think is sadly inevitable considering some of the rhetoric, to screw prospects of a REPUBLICAN REV in Congress.
