I'm torn on this one. I'm not a huge fan of Daschle and this rather significant faux pax of not paying $100K in taxes not only is bad legally, but really bad politically, for a number of reasons.

But I take some analysts word for it that he's the best candidate for the role of HHS secretary, and it may an overreach to exclude him over the tax scandal.

I lean against his confirmation, but I'd be interested in other opinions.

In other news, Eric Holder has been confirmed as AG.

Yes, and he will be I'm sure. Obama + Senate Finance Committee = Win.

What he did was wrong, and he has apologized rather than trying to overexplain why. I don't think we can really ask for too much more. And while it may seem a little irresponsible or whatever, I really think we should just move on, get these people confirmed barring any severe problems, and try to resolve things as soon as possible.

Should he? No.
Will he? Yes.

I agree. Obama needs to not look like a hypocrite. Either he wants a scandal-free administration or he doesn't.

Yes, Daschle is qualified, but you can't tell me that he's the only qualified guy in a country with 300 million people.

He's out

Quote:
“This morning Tom Daschle asked me to withdraw his nomination for Secretary of Health and Human Services. I accept his decision with sadness and regret….Tom made a mistake, which he has openly acknowledged. He has not excused it, nor do I. But that mistake, and this decision, cannot diminish the many contributions Tom has made to this country from his years in the military to his decades of public service."

Former Senator Tom Daschle's statement:

“I have just informed the President that I am withdrawing my name from consideration for Secretary of Health and Human Services….If 30 years of exposure to the challenges inherent in our system has taught me anything, it has taught me that this work will require a leader who can operate with the full faith of Congress and the American people, and without distraction. Right now, I am not that leader, and will not be a distraction…”

Good for him, and Obama. Should have done that from the jump, but better now than never. As Groucho said, he's certainly qualified, but you can't put someone evading 100k worth of taxes in your administration.

Someone, probably several people, have mentioned Howard Dean. That would be an inspired choice.

Dean deserves something; he's partially responsible for Obama's win, with his "50 state" strategy.

He's a medical doctor. He's a remarkable leader and organizer. The Dems owe him in ways that are beyond measure thanks to his strategies over the past 4 years. And he just left the DNC.

I'm not sure the stars could be better aligned.

Dean would be a great choice.

I'd say Dean is happy enough where he is.

I may be one of the few who doesn't like Dean all that much. Wouldn't mind if he was nominated though.

Surprised Daschle withdrew as he would have been confirmed. And I'm sure he would have been great in the position.

This make THREE Tax Issues with nominations. A bit weird so many related problems have occured with Obama's picks. Vetting process hole?

Ironically, it was the Obama team that first flagged the tax discrepancy. I think they didn't realize just how bad it was. Obama has come out and admitted it was a screw up on his part.

WASHINGTON - President Obama has settled on Gov. Kathleen Sebelius of Kansas, a key ally with a record of working across party lines, as his top choice for secretary of health and human services, advisers said Wednesday...

Ms. Sebelius resolved a state budget crisis on Tuesday and plans to be in Washington from Saturday through Tuesday for a meeting of the National Governors' Association. Asked about the cabinet job, her spokeswoman, Beth Martino, said the governor "is focused on the economic challenges currently facing Kansas, including our state budget and the impacts of the federal stimulus package."
