25 years from now.
Still the US........or will China have a glorious next generation and will be ready in 2035. Does the Russian Bear rise again. Or will the European Union take the lead..........Or will it be even Iran the new Oil Power Nation?

Discuss.

China for sure.

Shanghai scared the shit out of me last month when I visited. I learned this little bit of info from the documentary I.O.U.S.A

Quote:
China, which passed Japan in September as the largest holder of U.S. Treasuries, owns around $652 billion in American debt.

I think that by that time the term "superpower" will be fortunately obsolete. It is utterly meaningless in a post-Cold War world.

I think US and China will be the two definitive and fairly equal superpowers... budding each other for dominance.

They'll be vying over "space-land" like in Firefly

I don't know. I'm more excited about what happens in 2017 when Ukraine asks Russia to retrieve its fleet from their ports.

You guys are assuming nation states are going to be everyone's primary reference point in 2035. Wall Street et al. beg to differ.

Yeah The Economist was saying recently that the US and China are so intertwined now it's like there's this one superpower Chimerica.

It's going to take longer than another twenty-six years for that to happen.

If by "superpower" you mean have the largest GDP, that will be China.

I think it's even more interesting if you look at 2050 and beyond. Here's a good read about the importance of demographics and what it means for the Chinese economy. Obviously there's still a lot unknown and exactly what the birth rate is in rural China, but nonetheless the aging population in China will have significant ramifications on their economy. The government could offset this by lifting the one-child policy, but we'll see if that happens.

I do think the immigration into the US will be a key to sustaining the work-force demographic.

In general I don't think people look at demographics often enough to determine the economic future of a country.

The US is the last of the world superpowers, there should never be another. The USA's military is far too powerful to be overtaken in any realistic means in such a near future, leaving only a nuclear holocost to dethrone them. That holocost would certainly not be one sided, and would likely send the world back to the dark ages, without a superpower for hundreds more years.

No, the more likely situation is that the US's financial power very slowly dwindels over the coming decades, while their military remains the power of the world. Globalization will continue to occur, every major companies finances will become even more intertwined than they already are, and eventually the world will move towards something similar to the EU in Europe.

Again, speaking on a far bigger timeline than the 25 years suggested here since in that timeline, very little will change.

Hmmmm Karl has little understanding of how global primacy can develop.

The nuclear balance is such that its rendered almost irrelevent as long as both sides have nukes. This is why in a 1 v 1 conflict France was just as strong as the Soviet Union, As De Gaulle said

Quote:
Within ten years, we shall have the means to kill 80 million Russians. I truly believe that one does not light-heartedly attack people who are able to kill 80 million Russians, even if one can kill 800 million French, that is if there were 800 million French.

31 years is a long time in world politics let us wait and see.

Nope. They're too under the radar right now. No one would believe what you were doing and you'd appear the laughing stalk. Meanwhile, they sitting there, slowly accumulating wealth, international clout, a super-wealthy professional class, and academics...

Canada is in the best position to do well in this century, yeah. I hate to say this, but global warming is gonna be amazing for us. An area the size of Western Europe is going to thaw and be usable for agriculture, and we can access vast deposits of minerals much easier. Barring any trouble from Quebec or a conflict with the US and/or Russia, we're set.

Australia, not so much. Most of their arable land, from what I've read, has already turned into desert or is about to. But it is close to Asia, so that should help things along...

25 years ago there was still a Soviet Union. A lot can change in 25 years actually. ;)

Correct, but 25 years ago was 1983 .. how much has the USA changed since then? A good deal in some places, not so much in others. The same will ring true here, but the end result will be the same: A world which continued it's slow change toward globalization.

Other places will change to enable that, us, not so much.
