No, seriously. A South Texas grand jury has indicted Vice President Dick Cheney and former Attorney General Alberto Gonzales on charges related to the alleged abuse of prisoners in Willacy County's federal detention centers. The indictment criticizes Cheney's investment in the Vanguard Group, which holds interests in the private prison companies running the federal detention centers. It accuses Cheney of a conflict of interest and "at least misdemeanor assaults" on detainees by working through the prison companies. Gonzales is accused of using his position while in office to stop an investigation into abuses at the federal detention centers. Another indictment charges state Sen. Eddie Lucio Jr. with profiting from his public office by accepting honoraria from prison management companies. http://www.kvii.com/news/story.aspx?id=223992 |

Um, a former VP going to jail and especially a man like Cheney. I would doubt that... |

They should've waited until after January for the indictment, because Bush could easily pardon them from any punishment now. |

We'll see. Groucho could verify this but the AG can only bring the case. The Grand Jury has to grant the indictment. I think that means there's at least something there. |

Yeah, he at least got a group of average citizens (the Grand Jury) to agree that there is something there, so it's not like one guy doing something on his own. |

Regardless of outcome, couldn't Bush simply pardon them both on his last day in office ala Bill Clinton? |

Well, that's how it is supposed to be -- in fact, usually you're not pardoned until you're finished your sentence and parole, but Ford pardoned Nixon for any crimes he committed or may have committed before the charges were even filed. |

Quote: A judge in Texas has dismissed indictments against Vice President Dick Cheney and former Attorney General Alberto Gonzales. Administrative Judge Manuel Banales ruled Monday that the indictments were improperly returned by a Willacy County grand jury. The indictment against Cheney alleged that his personal investment in the Vanguard Group, which invests in private prison companies, made him culpable in alleged prisoner abuse at privately run federal detention centers. The judge also dismissed indictments against two district judges, two special prosecutors and the district clerk, saying the prosecutor was both the alleged victim and the person presenting the cases. http://abcnews.go.com/US/wireStory?id=6371489 |
