Can we get an Election Day General Discussion Thread?
Here here! This post on 538 made me happy. Quote: Long-time lurker, first time poster.
We live on the North Side of Pittsburgh in a mixed neighborhood. Had about a 45 minute wait to vote this AM; fellow in line with us said he'd been voting here for 30 years and had never seen a line that long. He was a Republican for Obama, BTW.
Many, many African-Americans; far more than we'd ever seen there for any other election. Not unexpected, I guess, but still great to see.
I choked up a bit when I hit the "vote" button. I'm 50 and can remember when n****** was a commonly-used word. When MLK preached, and how he died. Hell, when it was big news that a "Negro" was for the first time a lead character in a TV series (Diahann Carroll in Julia, if you're keeping score at home). I truly never thought this day would come.
Thanks to everyone here for keeping me sane, if sleepless, for the last month. And, thanks to Nate's ancestors for bequeathing him such a big brain
Now I'm off to GOTV.
Welcome home, America. We've been waiting up for you.

Re: Can we get an Election Day General Discussion Thread?
538 thinks Franken's bid for the Senate (Minnesota) could be the race to watch today. Should be a fun one to watch.
Anyways, as CNN likes to call them, "my races" for the day are:
Presidential: FL comes first, as always. Then umm....NC, OH, IN, VA and it'll be cool to see how close Georgia gets.
Senate: MN, GA (hoping for at least a runoff)
Ballot Measures: Prop 8 (CA) and Amendment 2 (FL) will hopefully go down in flames The ones on Affirmative Action should be interesting to watch as well...but eh...we'll see Decriminalize prostitution in San Francisco!

Yes, hopefully Franken will win.
I think Shelly Moore Capito will keep her house seat here (WV), but gosh I'm praying Anne Barth defeats her. Every member of Congress from WV will be a democrat then, but besides that fact, Anne Barth really seems like someone who will make progress, which Capito hasn't.

Re: Can we get an Election Day General Discussion Thread?
My voting story: I'm a shit-nowhere redneck town in central PA. 30 minutes ago, I go inside to vote; there, I find two very nice old ladies with the roster, another woman voting (apparently for Barack), and an old, cranky man sitting in a chair and loudly raging against "THAT Obama." I wondered: why is this guy here? He doesn't seem to be voting. The best part is when he began criticising Obama for being in the voting booth "At least seven minutes...but you only get THREE!" Yes, he was accusing Obama of somehow breaking election rules as this old man broke multiple rules about polling places. Whatever, right? I mean, who cares? Well, when I finally got to the machine, the nice roster woman told me what to do and, in a flourish I would have thought came some some bizarre satirical film about the day, said "If you have any questions, just ask the Judge."omfg Happy election day.

Re: Can we get an Election Day General Discussion Thread?
I am really nervous. I thought Obama had it in the bag. However, there are a ton of people that are not going to vote for him, and I wonder if they are being captured in the polls. In VA at my precinct at 6:00 when the polls opened there were was a long line (a little longer than 2004). It took an hour to vote about the same as 2004, but we could vote by paper ballot which allowed more votes per hour.
I thought that it was a good sign for Obama, but there were not more African-Americans or younger voters than there were in 2004, when there should have been. I wonder how accurate these polls are, because the people in line did not look like Obama voters and Kerry carried this precinct 60-40 last time, and Webb won 65-35. I mean, I can't identify every voter as a likely Dem or Repub but I am pretty accurate with my observations, having worked the Polls too many times.
The good news is the Dems were much more organized in having many more poll workers than the Republicans, which was not the case in 2004 (it was about 50/50).
I honestly could see Obama winning by 3-5 million votes and losing the Electoral College. Not likely, but if he doesn't get one in the NC, VA, GA, FLA block or Ohio, Colorado, Missouri, it could be 269 and he has to win Nevada and New Mexico. I think that is his Firewall and he can't go lower than that, if he doesn't win Nevada he picks up another toss-up state. However, if McCain runs the table Obama is a few votes short in the Electoral College.

The best Drudge has is that Hillary campaigned for Obama at her polling location. zzzzzzzzzz Wet ballots in Virginia are just about the biggest scandal at the moment.

From a 538 poster Quote: A happy snippet from reader feedback on Ben Smith's Politico blog: Quote: "I live in bluest part of Blue NoVA, Alexandria City. In 2004, my polling place went 80-20 for Kerry. 2,886 votes were cast in that election. I got in a long line in the dark this morning at 5:55am, I was voter number 2,531."

Obama won the Dem. primary 374-245 over Clinton. McCain got 83 votes in the Republican primary. Registered voters actually went down from 2004-2008, although I am only comparing primary numbers.

He must live in the 106 Precinct. One thing that happend in 2004 is that by 10:00 about 2/3's of all the people that voted for the day had already voted (at least at my precinct). If that is the case today then it would end up around 3800 votes for the 106. http://www2.sbe.virginia.gov/web_docs/E ... 510.htm#01

Does anyone know how Obama will be replaced as Senator for IL? I have no idea how to look this up. I was able to re-elect Birden this morning, but noone was running to fill Obama's slot. Do we just have one senator next year???

There were two others jockeying for position in August when I was in Chicago, one was a state senator and the other was congressman. I can't remember either one's name, and I think the state senator might have dropped out.

Yoshue, this is something the Obama campaign would love to know -- I'm one of the attorney poll watchers in PA for them. Can you call them at 215-525-4840?

Just got back. Waited about an hour and a half. They only had 8 booths which was rather annoying. There were some picketers for Yes and No on Prop Initiative 1. Not really surprising.
They didn't hand out "I Voted" stickers, i'm bummed

Re: Can we get an Election Day General Discussion Thread?
http://www.tarrance.com/files/Final-bal ... iction.pdfObama 50.2%, McCain 48.3%. Supposedly, this group was the closest to the actual results in 1992, 1996, and 2004. If this is the actual margin it doesn't give Obama too much margin for error in all the battle ground states, because he has huge leads in Cali, NY, and Illinois, with McCain only comfortably ahead in Texas among the big states.

Re: Can we get an Election Day General Discussion Thread?
Well I voted at my usual place. It's at an elementary school where I went to long ago. It was manned by four ladies. They had two voter rolls to work with in case of long lines but there were no lines when I got there at 1115 to cast my vote.
In my state of OK, our main ballot was the same other than the congressional and local seats. On the back of our ballot were 4 state questions. I believe I voted yes on all those. The only two important ones were eliminating property taxes for certain disabled veterans and adding an amendment to the excessive state consitution saying we have the right to hunt, fish etc.
I ended up voting No on all the judges and clerks to "retain" their seats. I voted dem against Tom Cole to hopefully get his butt out of office. I stuck with Inhofe and cast an extra vote for Palin.
Also, in my county we vote on large scantron ballot which I prefer. We have a paper trail in case things go wrong.

http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/quiz/20 ... s2008-quiz2008 Election Quiz to kill time. I got 21/30, which is pretty bad compared to how obsessed I used to be with presidential elections, but some of the questions were pretty arcane, IMHO.
