With the baby boomers all across the world, about to start dying off soon and looking at the exit polls for young and middle aged voters, it's gonna be really hard in a few years for Republicans to make any inroads at any election when national security is not an issue.

i do expect the GOPs to become more centrist, or even more conservative. (eg Palin) BBC made a comment that she just couldn't build on the core GOP fanbase. which is true. What does fiscal conservatism have to do with Republicans?

If by that you mean they CLAIM they do, then yes. But there is virtually no evidence that they govern as fiscal conservatives. This is part of the reason why they were so roundly rejected by American voters. They really suck at the economy.

Frankly, I WANT them to come back from the wilderness as fiscal conservatives. We need that to balance the worst tendencies of the Dems. But the current Republican party isn't it. And the ones who come back are looking more and more like Palin-style religious whackos, like Bush times ten.

It's cyclical the GOP will be back. The only question is how long they remain in the cold and how long it takes to get their far right element's which now control the party under control. They need to reinvent them self's and no longer run on a Reaganite theme just like the Dem's finally learned with Clinton they couldn't run on New Deal politic's anymore.

Republicans can be very competitive among younger voters; they just need to abandon relying on fear-mongering. If they put up candidates (not just for president, but all over the place), who push free trade and balanced budget agenda, they can win over a lot of the Obama voters.

it depends how the presidencies are in the next 10-20 years. obama being the first. but yea it basically it cyclical and they wiil be back.

They can do that, but who's going to believe them at this point? The same ones who continue to claim to be small government conservatives are the ones who blew a $5 trillion hole in the budget and increased spending at its highest rate since FDR.

For the immediate future, I think Dems are going to have to screw it up in order for Reps to have a chance.

I don't know where this logic is coming from. McCain still got 46% of the popular vote. That's after Obama's campaign completely blew him out of the water. A good campaign can overcome a weak candidate. People are sheep, very easily manipulated. That will never change, so when some republican comes around that can push the buttons (a job made especially easy if he's running after a second term democrat), they'll regain the power hold.

I posted a thread awhile back speculating about which Republican party would emerge from the ashes. The social conservatives or the fiscal conservatives. I hope for the latter but fear the former, but the evidence seems to point to the social conservatives. All they've done over the last 8 years is marginalize themselves more and more through identity politics, social issues, and of course their marked inability to govern.

I hope I'm wrong. We need fiscal conservatives.

I exepct Obama to disappoint in the first two years, not because Obama sucks, but people people had to high of expectations for him.

I expect Rep to hold and pickup a few in 2010.

Then I would expect Obama to clear out the mess and then we will see some fruits of this labour and he will remain very popular and get reelected easily, unless the GOP pull off some crazy gambit.

Then he will stay popular till 2016, however the GOP I would expect would be recharged by something until then and expect a very close election. Why? Obama is great, but he will do at least one thing to really really piss of conservatives.

Clinton and Eisenhower left as being very popular and the party lost in very close elections. 1960 and 2000, both are now widely seen as being stolen elections.

Obama won this election for the same reason Bush did... because he's more charasmatic and was a better speaker, a more popular figure. In terms of attracting voters who had no idea of the issues they were voting for (other than broad topics like stopping the war) he destroyed McCain. The guy is huge, a brand like the Che shirts... his appearance as a symbol of "change" did much more than anything in his platform. How many college students and young people cheering on Obama like crazy because he's Obama actually know his stance on healthcare or the economy... I'm guessing not much. The guy was a rock star this election.

All the Republicans need to do after Obama's term is up, is find a candidate more popular than the other guy, and they'll win. That's how Clinton won despite the Dems being absolutely DEAD in the 80s, and how Dubya got in despite the economy kicking ass under Clinton. As the media hold and influence gets stronger and the election becomes a bigger and bigger event, the person themselves is becoming more and more important and their issues less so. This is not a good thing. We may get lucky and find good candidates like Obama, but we'll also get an equal number of ones like Dubya...

One of the most astute predictions of the movie Idiocracy may be in the president being a professional wrestler... it's funny on the surface, but disturbing when looked at closer. That's why I don't like it when I hear Canadians say they wish our politicians get the coverage and "event" feel that the American election does and that ours is boring... I'll take the trade off of having the election being boring, but the candidates actually getting voted on according to their party's positions, over it becoming the glorified American Idol contest that it's turning into more and more every election in the US.
