The media takes a favored narrative and runs away with it, truth be damned. Soon enough, I'll get erroneously labeled as a flaming liberal again simply for having watched how things happened. And we accuse the Chinese of being dishonest with their own people?

Like when Cokie and others in the media criticized Obama for vacationing in Hawaii, it was a complete and total capitulation to the Republican talking points about Obama's alleged elitism, which has absolutely no basis in reality. What a pathetic low for the media.

How many stories have you heard about Bush vacationing in Crawford?

I was (which you know) pointing out that Bush has been hammered for vacationing "when Rome burns" for his entire presidency, yet Obama goes on vacation and you're there to defend him. I haven't a problem with either going on vacation since I know they are still working hard, just in a more comfortable place.

So, irrelevant and ENTIRELY missing the point.

The meme against Obama is NOT that he goes on vacation. The meme is that he's an elitist, as supposedly evidenced by visiting the "foreign, exotic" state of Hawaii, even though he was there visiting his grandmother and that's the state in which he was born.

So I defend Obama against the ELITISM charge because it's completely untrue. It's 100% concocted by the McCain campaign and is now being regurgitated by the media.

Contrast that with the Bush vacation meme. It is a FACT that he has taken more vacation time than any other president in history. It is a FACT that he was on vacation during the 9-11 attacks. It is a FACT that he was on vacation during Hurricane Katrina and that he stayed on vacation, literally playing golf and playing guitar (apparently your idea of "working hard"), for days after. And it is a fact that while thousands of people dying in New Orleans was not sufficient to get Bush away from the golf course, the religious nuts in Florida somehow managed to bring Bush back to Washington in the middle of the night to oversee a vote on the Terry Schiavo case.

If this were a discussion about how Obama takes too much vacation, then Bush's vacation might be relevant. But it isn't. It's about McCain lying about Obama being an elitist and how the media buys into it.
