Russia is involved now

It sounds like another Chechnya situation. It doesn't surprise me with the way Russia has been acting in the last few years.

Why does Georgia want the province? Aren't most people there Russians?

The province is trying to break away. I guess they are scared that other parts of Georgia will do the same.

Hasn't South Ossetia been de facto independent since not long after Georgia itself gained independence? Lack of diplomatic recognition didn't stop Taiwan, did it?

Oops, no idea how PMs got blocked. Must've been from my deactivated period.

From what I gather, Georgia simply is unhappy that South Ossetia is independent, that they've always wished this wasn't the case, and acted upon that wish.

Mikheil Saakashvili seems to have started off on a good note, pushing through a number of economic reforms, but has been grabbing power and silencing opposition in more recent times. How exactly, though, do you bomb somebody else in self defense? That's Bush-logic right there.

TSKHINVALI, Georgia (AP) — Russia sent columns of tanks and reportedly bombed Georgian air bases Friday after Georgia launched a major military offensive Friday to retake the breakaway province of South Ossetia, threatening to ignite a broader conflict.

Here's your answer to who started the whole thing. Look at the spinmeisters in Our american newsmedia pretending that Russia is the agressor here when they are out to protect their 'natural' citizens from being killed.

Exactly. This is pathetic. Right there on the Yahoo headline: "Georgia reports hundreds of civilians dead after Russian attack"

I feel sorry for Russia at times. It's as if there are three kinds of Americans: ones that hate Russia for human rights, ones that want to bomb them, and ones that don't care. They've done good and bad, but they don't deserve this shit. This is only two weeks after I found out about Estonian Nazi worship.

The humor starts: McCain called on Russia to "immediately and unconditionally cease its military operations and withdraw all forces from sovereign Georgian territory."

McCain's chief foreign policy aide, Randy Scheunemann, lobbied for Georgia. :funny:

McCain shouldn't get his uneducated self involved in this.

I really think (hope) this will end soon. Georgia cannot compete with Russia...once Russia is involved, Georgia is toast.

When I saw the Yahoo headline, I was thinking "Societ Union is on the rise!" Now it makes a lot more sense. Georgia attacked a Russian-populated country and Russian sent in tanks to protect its people.

Makes sense, though I want more information.

I agree with you Rumpelschtiltzchen, the US media is blaming Russia for most of the conflict. I was watching Russian TV with my parents yesterday and it was completely different, I'm sure it has a bit bias to it as well, but certainly not as misinforming as the US broadcasts.

Russia wants to subtly keep the status quo and Georgia wants to keep good publicity against big bad ol' Russia even when Russia isn't the real offender here, but also when keeping the old status quo...in a way. Is that basically the whole story?

Boy, if Georgia wants to join the EU in the next century...

That's because internationally nobody trusts Russia. Honestly, I do believe the Kremlin has plenty of ulterior motives here, I'm sure they want to keep a good hold on whatever they can of the old empire, but it really is a case of Georgia desperately not wanting to give up on the territory for no real reason other than nationalism, and it has been ever since before S. Ossetia was even effective independent. So can the mess really be blamed on Georgia? Yes.

But morally? Yeah, I don't give a shit. I'm numb.

The US government is kind of stuck in the middle of this situation due to these reasons:

Quote:
The United States is an ally of Georgia and has irritated Russia by backing Tbilisi's bid to join the NATO military alliance.

Quote:
VAZIANI, Georgia - One thousand U.S. troops began a military training exercise (week of July 15) in Georgia on Tuesday against a backdrop of growing friction between Georgia and neighboring Russia.

In addition to the current info from usatoday saying there are at least 250 US military advisors currently in Georgia.

I don't think the US should get involved in any way. Russia can handle this situation, hopeful Georgia will realize its stupidity.
