Wal-Mart Stores Inc., the world's largest retailer, denied a report Friday that it had pressured employees to vote against Democrats in November because of worries that a bill the party supports would make it easier for workers to unionize.

The measure, called the Employee Free Choice Act, would allow labor organizations to unionize workplaces without secret ballot elections. It was co-sponsored by Barack Obama, the presumed Democratic presidential candidate, and opposed by John McCain, the presumed Republican nominee.

Here's the original story about Wal-Mart's actions from the Wall Street Journal: http://online.wsj.com/article/SB121755649066303381.html

Let's assume you were a WalMart employee and knew nothing about politics -- and let's assume your employer just told you "Don't vote for democrats, because they favor you being able to have a union to get better wages and benefits" --
what would you do?

Seriously, I hope WalMart keeps this campaign up!

The only thing cheaper at Wal-Mart is Yoplait yogurt.

I shop at the local Chinese family-operated stores. I get the same Made-in-China merchandise.

If they keep this up, then Repubs will win.

Do you really think Wal Mart employees are smart enough to think on their own?

Heh, true. They were dumb enough to take a job at Wal Mart, for one thing.

Walmart offers their employees competitive wages and benefits and there is no need for a union.

Then there's no need to be afraid of employees forming one if they so choose, right?

Wages aren't the direct issue here -- that's an ongoing dispute. The problem is, a company with 1.5 million employees is telling its employees how to vote. I have a beef with that regardless of what the company is and what its reputation is.

forming a union would hurt more then help the employees.

Yes, higher wages and health insurance can be quite a bummer, but if Wal-mart is taking care of its employees, then given the choice, they wouldn't form one, right, because everything is already so awesome.

when you look at the graph in that article it shows that 48% of walmarts political contributions go to the Democratic party. I highly doubt they are having secret meetings telling employees how to vote.

Unions tell its members how to vote, what's wrong with Wal-Mart doing the same?

It's better than McDonald's. Way better. It doesn't make you smell like fries at day's end. And at least the proles there speak English, just doubleplusungood English. :noway:

The only ones who should be afraid are the employees, really.

We all know what happens when Wal-Mart workers form a union: http://www.bloomberg.com/apps/news?pid= ... fer=canada
