Post The National Election begins today - the Hillary-free thread
I'm not responding to any more Hillary vs Obama threads, as they are moot at this point. It's time for the parties to shore up the supporters and start discussing issues that matter. I don't really care what a reverend said, or if McCain thinks the election is in January or Obama thinks there are 57 states. That stuff is a side show.

Clearly I'm for Obama. While I like his platform and his ideas, they are basically classical liberal fair. What I really love about him is his fresh new approach to politics, communication, and outreach. This is not a subjective thing. The FACT is that Obama has more individual contributors than any presidential candidate in history, by a long shot. He is the real deal grassroots candidate.

and very populist and idealistic however he can go beyond that and talk about some very complicated and tricky issues masterfully as well.

He can say stuff like dream, hope, love, chage, yes we can!!! and get the masses excited.

He can also say very intelligent points especially about Race.

I like Obama's communication and he seems like he is willing to reach across party lines. I don't like any of his policies besides Iraq though.

McCain feels like he will just be Bush Term 3. I got burned once before I don't want to again.

I'm leaning towards Bob Barr at the moment. Useless vote, probably but the two party system in America needs to change.

I really think Obama could win this in a landslide. McCain had a two-month of free time to organize his base and define himself, and he still couldn't break 45% in the national poll. And tonight certainly showed their oratory skills are from two opposite planets. Add in the fund-raising power and the unprecedented enthusiasm he brings, and once Clinton finally comes to her sense and supports Obama in a heartfelt fashion, I don't see him losing unless some scandal or outrageous slip of words occurs.

it will be close it will be range from 45%-55% to 48%-52%...

It will not be a Ronald Regan "Good Morning America" landslide...

McCain should be able to scare enough old people and white guys to stay competitive. He has places like Florida locked and could steal a Blue state somehow...

However I see Obama picking up Ohio and if Hilary is around for sure...
Indiana seems likely as well.

You see with Hilary around Obama would be able to pick up those two states. Then Obama could pick up the Rocky Mountain states...
Perhaps Virgina as well as Obama is popular there.

Cool thread, I am getting tired of the sore losers I am hearing. We need to unite the party to try to recapture the white house.

And the truth is though if the democrats get to happy they may still lose as McCain could steal a blue state...

Here's George Lucas on Obama's win:

Quote:
"We have a hero in the making back in the United States today because we have a new candidate for president of the United States, Barack Obama," Lucas said when asked who his childhood heroes were.

Obama, "for all of us that have dreams and hope, is a hero," Lucas said.

Yeah, I'm thinking this could be a landslide too. Barring some kind of unexpected disaster.

Let's see how the contest is framed/spun by CNN, FoxNews....

I can almost guarantee this won't be a landslide victory for Obama.

Yeah Jim, not voting Republican makes a difference on its own, even if you go 3rd party

Actually, Obama does better in Indiana than Hillary does; check the maps in the other thread.

A lot of the states that Hillary has in her column would never go for Obama even if Hillary was on the ticket, as evidenced by the number of hillbillies who said they would never vote for a black man in the exit polls (W Va, Kentucky, much of Appalachia).

I would like for you to not use that term. It's the equlivalent of calling the asian community chinks, the gay community faggots, the hispanic community low riders or spics, the black community niggers, etc. I don't really care how hillbilly is viewed or used where you or anyone else live, but it's quite offensive here, and it does offend me when used like this. So I'm asking you to not do it again when refering to the voters in the Appalachia region, or anyone here.

Hey, I don't live that far away from Appalachia myself, you know.

I never meant to imply that everyone who lives there is a Hillbilly, nor did I imply that all Hillary supporters in the area were Hillbillies -- but there is a group of people who are in the Appalachias who are racist, backward-thinking and proud of it. They chose to be that way (unlike the examples you gave above). And as Frank Zappa once said "It's OK to be prejudiced against assholes, because nobody was born an asshole."

I agree. I just never thought of "hillbilly" as an ethnic or racial slur. It was more of an insult to a type of personality than a particular race or anything. Maybe I should have used "redneck"? Or is that just as bad?

I mean, when I see, for instance, some redneck riding down the road with a confederate flag bumper sticker, I don't think "Oh, I can't make fun of him or insult him, because he is someone of a protected group; he can't help it." Instead I think "what an asshole."

Nobody made these rednecks/hillbillies decide that they would never vote for a black man than themselves. It was a choice. You aren't born a bigot.
