Torture supporters are not only giant scumbags, they are also short-sighted and stupid. http://www.time.com/time/nation/article ... 11,00.html Mohammed al-Qahtani, reputedly one of the most dangerous prisoners held at Guantanamo and one of six to who might have faced the death penalty for alleged participation in the 9/11 plot, has just had charges against him dropped by the top legal authority at the base. The charges were dismissed without prejudice, meaning that a prosecutor could reinstate them at any time. But few observers expect that to happen, largely because Qahtani underwent protracted torture and the threat of torture during his interrogation at Guantanamo, a process that tainted his confessions as well as the evidence he gave against other prisoners. Statements derived from torture are notoriously unreliable, rendering useless otherwise high value suspects. And even more priceless, the US is releasing Qahtani BECAUSE his trial would introduce proof that he was tortured illegally. Rather than face those charges, the US is simply dropping the case. Ugh. |

I am still amazed that there are people who defend torture. It wasn't that long ago that the US tried to be the "good guys". |

insomniacdude wrote: ![]() I think there's an argument to be made that any experienced interrogator would have known that torture produces unreliable information - and if words gets out, your case implodes, as it did here. At Abu Ghraib, what happened there wasn't about interrogation at all. That would lead me to conclude that the torture was simply about punishment. The purpose of torture is always torture. People who practice or authorize it are war criminals. |
