The Republicans have argued and defended an unprecedented volume of executive power the past seven years. From illegal wire-tapping to torture to signing statements that allow the president to ignore the law. They've adamantly made the argument that criticizing the president during a time of war (which, if they get their way, will never ever end) is treason. They've supported and/or defended massive increases in government borrowing and spending that will inevitably result in huge tax increases on the middle class (never the rich of course).

I must admit that I have some glee in imagining that they might wake up one morning in January having bestowed all of this power on Hillary Clinton, their worst nightmare.

They will, of course, reverse course faster than Mitt Romney - with no sense of irony or shame. And that would be the one good thing about a Hillary presidency. Republicans would finally be motivated to take away these executive powers, to restore court oversight and checks and balances.

Hillary would be worse than Bush.

There are differences, of course. The question is - how much do they matter? My opinion is that the biggest decision the next president will make is who to nominate for SCOTUS. That is the only reason I would support McCain.

If Hillary is the next president, then the Republicans have a much easier chance to push their agenda through and they will have a much easier time to win in 2012.
