What is the dropout rate for college students? Are you telling me that the person that spends two years there and racks up $50k in debt only to become an electrician or mechanic wouldn't be better off skipping college?

Besides, not all jobs need college degrees. Salesmen, electricians, carpenters, pipefitters, welders, etc. are good jobs and don't require a degree.

 back at you.

That's not to say there aren't a lot of people who should go to college that weren't able to. But the a large chunk of the people in college have no reason to be there.

It was a fairly interesting debate, though neither mananged to do much, again.

Don't think it'll matter at all, and I doubt the final debate will either unless something big happens in the final weeks, or on debate night.

How about the poor smart people? People like me? I had to get loans to go to school, because I couldn't pay for myself. Shouldn't smart middle class to poor people given a chance to go to college?

Yes and you just said you got a student loan (as I have). Those people can do the same. The reason you went to college was to get a better paying and less physically demanding job. You should be able to pay back your loan.

Why does the person without your smarts owe you a god damn thing when your going to take his money and get a higher paying job in the end?

Obama was much better, although McCain had a better closing. I think also that McCain seemed really disdainful and disrespectful of Obama, walking around while he was talking, interrupting him a few times, and so on. I am curious to see if others thought that as well...

Well Obama did break the debate rules, so I guess that showed some disrespect on his part.

The fact that you support less people educating themselves, and less people having the right to college and a brighter future if they wish for it, is frankly disturbing.

To those that say it was "boring"... what exactly were you looking for? None of the issues facing us today are "entertaining" so I'm not sure why boring would even be something relevant.

I think both candidates clearly expressed their views and vision for this country.

The economy wasn't a surprise enough?

As for this "debate", the whole problem is that we don't have debates -- we have joint press conferences. Because the candidates get to dictate the rules of the debate, they get it all watered down and pick moderators who don't ask tough questions or follow ups.

We used to have the League of Women's Voters run these things, what happened to that? These things need to be like a good journalist's cross examination of a candidate, not letting them get away with anything, and pinning them down, and letting the other side respond...

We'd learn a lot more and wouldn't fall asleep.

There is no "right" to go to college and just because you go to college doesn't mean that you will have a brighter future. In fact, if you are not college material (aka, a person with subpar intelligence) and choose to go to college only to wind up in a job that you could obtain without college, why rack up the debt by going to college?
Have you been to a college campus? Many people learn nothing and simply get drunk and waste daddy's dime.

I also don't "support less people educating themselves." I simply don't want to have to pay my hard earned money so a rich kid (and most college students are middle to upper class) can go to college and not have to pay for it.

Post Re: The Second Debate
Yay! Just got back from another Debate Party ... well not so much a party ... and more like a get-together. This time however there was a cynic lawyer (former Homicide detective) that was in the group. Made for some interesting comments.

During the debate many times it seemed that Obama and McCain would not directly answer the questions asked and would try to go around the crux of the question. Other times they did talk directly to the question, though I thought that McCain's remark about "I'll answer the question Tom" was condescending since he was doing the same. The lawyer commented that there seemed to be a lot of fluff from both. Both were taking way too much time especially in the rebuttal portions.

McCain said at one point that he imagined we were tired of the back and forth bickering, that indeed we were, but continued to do exactly that.

I still don't think either of them grasp the global impacts of the economic crisis the U.S. is facing and how that will affect either's plans (unless of course we borrow even more).

I felt sorry for some of the people asking the questions ... they looked extremely nervous.

Was it me or did Obama not get to answer the question about having an Manhattan type project for figuring out the future of energy within the country? Maybe I just missed that answer (or maybe he didn't answer at all). I would have loved to hear a detailed answer to that or even a yes. It was something a professor of chemistry of mine suggested in the early 90s that I thought was an incredible idea.

More thoughts to come ...
