If you mean that his endorsement was months in the making, I guess so. But he wanted to wait until the debates were over and until the GOP had made their moves (ie the Palin pick and negative campaigning).

the speech didn't come off as months in the making. that TIME article contradicts the title a bit. he was just getting frustrated with the stupidity of the McCain camp.

its a retarded way for Republican Average Joes to know something about the political process.

Well no, the speech didn't come off as months in the making. As the articles says [though, the article is very vague in his supposed preparation for endorsing a democrat and waiting for months to spring the trap as it were] and as I said, he saw the debates, the Islamophobia and Palin and worked on writing the speech to say exactly what he wanted to about his frustration on how they were running their campaign and what decisions the GOP was making. He did support McCain in the past, but it has been a month and a half for us (including Powell) to question his decision making after his choice as Palin as his VP.

Palin has been one of the main reasons that most Obamacons have given for dumping McCain and supporting Obama. It's not just her, but what she represents about McCain's ability to make important decisions.

IMO this endorasment has clearly made me support Obama.

A bit to liberal for my taste and perhaps a man who has still not outgrown his "hippie" idealistic days, but a few months of being President will take care of that. :shades:

Holy. Shit.

Scotty McClellan has endorsed...Barack Obama!

NEW YORK -- Scott McClellan, President Bush's former press secretary, says he is backing Barack Obama for president.

McClellan made the endorsement during a taping of Comedian D.L. Hughley's new show that is premiering on CNN this weekend. The former Bush administration official said he wanted to support the candidate that has the best chance for changing the way Washington works and getting things done.

He's the second former Bush administration figure this week to publicly back Obama, following former Secretary of State Colin Powell. McClellan caused bitterness among his former co-workers with a tell-all book that criticized Bush.

In what appears to be a desperation move, Sen. Elizabeth Dole (R-NC) has been running an ad suggesting her opponent, state senator Kay Hagan (D) is an atheist. Hagan denies this but it brings to mind Colin Powell's remarks when he endorsed Barack Obama. He said that there are rumors that Obama is a Muslim and they are not true. Then he added: "What if he is? Is there something wrong with being a Muslim in this country?" Kay Hagan is not an atheist, but what if she were? Is there something wrong with being an atheist in this country? Seems to me like the same rules ought to apply.

Being an atheist in politics is the kiss of death. Much wore than being a Muslim.

Being an public atheist would not get you elected in Canada, forget America.

Like, someone can be an closeted atheist and be elected, but if one is public about it, I am sure they would lose.

I personally would not vote for one, because he or she does not share my values.

Belief in a supernatural being is a value?

I meant beliefs sorry..

anyways its something a lot of you may find to be stupid or absurd, but this is the general view of the people.

A politician does not have to be religious, but the person must deeply respect it.

I'm sure there have been several politicians (even Presidents and Prime Ministers) who were atheists.

John McCain, for instance, never goes to church.

Fortunately, John McCain will never be president nor prime minister. ;)

Wikipedia:
Gerhard Schröder - the former Chancellor of Germany - identifies himself as a Protestant, but does not appear to be religious. He did not add the optional phrase So wahr mir Gott helfe ("so help me God") when sworn in as chancellor for his first term in 1998.

I think some people here are confusing being agnostic with being an atheist. One is that you don't believe in a formalized God. The other, that you believe there is No God.

I think its silly, but I agree with Krem that being an atheist is political anethema. I remember from somewhere that there have been polls conducted where voters have admitted they feel more comfortable voting for someone who believes in a higher power different from their own (a Hindu, Muslim, Jewish, etc) than voting for someone who has clearly stated that they don't believe there is a higher power at all.

This is a very good poll that was done to see who people would support in an election. Some statistics:

Quote:
Muslims, atheists – and yes, Mormons – are less fortunate among Republicans: fully 63% become less supportive of a Muslim candidate and even more (74%) are less supportive of an atheist. Mormons don’t fare as well among Republicans either: 28% are less supportive and 15% are more supportive of a Mormon.

Mormons (32% less, 9% more supportive), Muslims (35% less, 10% more supportive), and atheists (50% less, 7% more supportive) don’t fare all that well with Democratic votes either.

When told that Romney is a Mormon, 30% of Republicans say they are less likely to vote for him and 15% say they are more likely to vote for him. Fifty-three percent (53%) say Romney being a Mormon makes no difference in Republicans’ propensity to vote for him. While Clinton, Giuliani, and Obama all benefit in varying degrees from their religious identity, Romney looses support from being Mormon.

So atheist is definitely the worst, but Muslims and Mormons are right up there.
