Re: Repub nominee watch - Ron Paul leading Iowa - Go Ron Pau
lol
It was a totally pointless battle as the war had ended. However, Military it was a solid victory
It had a big effect... - Stopped British influence in the Louisiana, Mississippi River area. - Ended the war on a high note for America and was a big moral boost and source of pride - Last time the British and Americans fought - Made Andrew Jackson into a war hero and able to get into the White House.

Yeah, and we kinda lost that war anyways. If we had won, Canada would have been a part of the US.

Re: Repub nominee watch - Ron Paul leading Iowa - Go Ron Pau
It was the American Civil war that really drove Canada to unite and become a country. What we had going before was terrible and would have let us be swallowed up by the US over time.

I'm sure that's what the Americans in charge thought back in 1812.

The Battle of New Orleans made Americans think we won the War of 1812. We got our buts kicked in Canada and the our Capitol was burned. Now the war did lead to the Native Americans being pushed West.

Re: Repub nominee watch - Ron Paul leading Iowa - Go Ron Pau
Latest Poll Numbers from Iowa:
PPP(D): Paul (20%), Romney (19%), Santorum (18%), Gingrich (14%), Pretty (10%), Bachmann (8%), Huntsman (4%) Des Miones Register: Romney (24%), Paul (22%), Santorum (15%), Gingrich (12%), Perry (11%), Bachmann (7%), Huntsman (2%) NBC News/Marist: Romney (23%), Paul (21%), Santorum (15%), Perry (14%), Gingrich (13%), Bachmann (6%), Huntsman (2%)
Avg.: Romney (22%), Paul (21%), Santorum (16%), Gingrich (13%), Perry (12%), Bachmann (7%), Huntsman (3%)
If Romney wins Iowa, he'll win the nomination. If Paul wins Iowa, Romney will still win the nomination. But if Santorum pulls the upset and wins Iowa, and gains support from Gingrich and Perry supporters (the anti-Romney group)... things could get interesting.

Oh goodness! Santorum stealing the nomination would make this election even BETTER!

Chippy wrote: Oh goodness! Santorum stealing the nomination would make this election even BETTER! Looking forward to the headline "Ron Paul Leaves Behind Santorum" I'm predicting a Ron Paul win. His followers are fanatics, and will show up during a hurricane to vote. Plus Iowa apparently allows everyone to vote in a primary and I'd bet many of his supporters are independents who do not get polled when they ask only Republicans. Fine with me; Romney and Huntsman are the ones the Democrats are worried about and the Republicans seen intent on making sure neither one gets nominated.

Re: Repub nominee watch - Iowa Caucus Jan. 3rd.
Well the bad news for Romney is it the primaries are proportional this year. That difference will not allow anybody to get a lot delegates. It will take until June for it to be decided. And there is a doomsday scenario. If it is too split, it could go to the convention.

Santorum has done pretty good so far. He could be the Mike Huckabee of this year.

Re: Repub nominee watch - Iowa Caucus Jan. 3rd.
Mixed feelings out of Iowa. The prospect of Santorum being the GOP candidate is sickening but I also don't think he could ever win the presidency (which, you know, the GOP candidate being someone who couldn't win is something I am VERY supportive of)...so I dunno.

Re: Repub nominee watch - Iowa Caucus Jan. 3rd.
Do people realize the difference between getting approximately 25% against one candidate attractive to the Christian Right in 2008 and 3 in 2012? Romney is doing much better than he did in 2008. Secondly, even if Santorum pulls this out where does he go from here? Huckabee was a much more viable candidate, yet he was unable to capitalize on a much better Iowa showing. There is no McCain to derail Romney in New Hampshire, so at this point it is Romney's to lose. Also, I do not agree that a long Republican Primary is necessarily an advantage for Obama, if the economy tanks and there are constant debates with Paul, Romney, and Santorum blasting the President for failed economic plans.
Lastly, the big winner tonight is Barack Obama. Turnout should have been 10-15k higher in order to justify a groundswell for throwing him out. Much can change in the next 11 months, but at this point Obama is in good shape.

CNN is reporting there aren't enough remaining votes for Paul to catch Santorum or Romney, and will have to settle for third in Iowa.

Romney has this in the bag, all of Santorum's chips were in Iowa and Romney doesn't care much about it and he still tied him. Santorum is a shitty version of Huckabee with more candidates splitting his votes. As long as he gets more famous for future runs and maybe gets enough name recognition to bump what's first on the "Santorum" google search off the page, he'll be happy

Santorum could keep things close for the next couple of months. I still think Romney has a lot of problems. Obama needs to call him out on his flip flopping like Bush did to Kerry.
