Post Sanford refuses stimulus
Not sure if anybody else heard this story.
http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20090314/ap_ ... stimulus_5
I am ashamed to admit he is my state's governor (although it wants to move from this state even more). SC is a mess we have one of the worst employment rate's, 49th in education, and in the body in health. Instead of taking the money to fix the problems, he wants the money to clean up the mess that he has made in this state. The man is a joke and he thinks he can run for President in 4 years off of this. If he is the nominee he will lose in a landslide.

Look on the bright side, you don't live in West Virginia or Michigan. Those states would resemble Eastern Europe in 1998 if they were independent countries.

True, although I am going to school in Tennessee which is much better economically. After that since my field is Museums, I could be living anywhere in the country (although probably Virginia knowing that is where most of the museum jobs are right now).

on a completely off topic note, what exactly do you do with a field in museums?

Criticize Ben Stiller films for historical inaccuracies and complain when people don't want their taxes to fund the museum you work in which nobody but schoolchildren peruse.

That is just lame and not true like how many Stiller movies had museums in it anyway, and I liked that movie. I am getting a degree in Public History which will help me get a job in a museum or historical site. Museums are important in educating the public about the past. More people visit museums then go to sporting events so there is a huge market there. So, don't bitch about my career choice thank you very much because I find I am giving a valuable resource to the community.

I don't know if you meant it this way, but that sounds condescending. As I noted earlier, a vast amount of people that visit museums are schoolchildren who do not have an option as to whether they go or not.

Condescending? You've insulted the entire industry of museums and people who work at museums as basically a waste of time that only exist because school children are forced to go to them.

I know right-wingers are anti-science, anti-education, and hypocrites, but you don't have to roll them all into one single post.

Here you go

Of course, museums are cheaper than sporting events which play into that

I agree with Beeble you insulted me and my entire profession. You are lucky that I am nice because some of fellow students would just cuss you out. Museums are there to serve the public good and help educate people further about the past and present. Without them we would lose a huge chunk of our heritage unless you think the past should only be in the hands of the rich and powerful.

I was referring to his tone with the phrase "educating the public." As if the public would not be educated but-for the existence of museums, which they don't go to anyway. I have no problem with museums, I just don't like them being publicly funded.

Would you refrain from using the word "hypocrite" in nearly every post? It's not like everyone is omniscient like you.

In no way am I "anti-science." I even like NASA which is government funded and which you are now going to snicker at as being hypocritical.

Thanks for educating me on what museums do, I am part of the public after all.

So you think Museums should be completely privatized? If every museum went private, 2/3's of them would fail. Only the giant ones would succeed because you can't money off of Museums. Museums have to rely on some public dollars to subsided the money they get from fund raising. Do you think the government shouldn't give money to the Smithsonian? Or National Parks like Gettysburg or Jamestown? Most of those sites would die without government money or else charge 45 bucks like Williamsburg does.

About educating the public, what I meant was they go along way in helping. They are there to safeguard artifacts of the past and aid our education system in teaching the public. All of the successful museums have focused on education as their primary goal because other wise they can't survive under the old model.

Is it linked at all to archaeology? I'd think that'd be more lucrative, but I could be wrong.

Well that is more natural history. Honestly, the most lucrative museum ones right now are the science ones and the few big private ones like Williamsburg. I can still make a good living and I am at the best school in the field.
