Dems in Utah call GOP's bluff on gay rights
http://andrewsullivan.theatlantic.com/t ... e-c-1.htmlWell, it served a purpose of a sort in Utah. The Republican leadership long insisted they were not anti-gay, that they were eager to find some legal protections for gay couples unable to marry, and were solely concerned with the "redefinition" of the word "marriage". And every single bill to add some semblance of protection for gay couples and people was killed. Today's hearing on a bill to give gay couples such things as hospital visitation rights was more than revealing:
Quote: Probably the most frustrating part for the bill's supporters is that HB160 obviously was dead before the House Judiciary Committee convened... Strikingly, few committee members bothered to ask questions, prompting chairwoman Rep. Lorie Fowlke to remark: "My, we have a quiet committee today." Rep. Keith Grover, R-Orem, idly surfed the Web on his laptop as unmarried couples told of their fears that they would not be able to care medically, financially and emotionally for "the person who matters to me most."
It's not about protecting marriage; it's about treating gay citizens and their relationships with contempt. At least Equality Utah has now proven that. And that is indeed a useful and clarifying thing.Republican State Sen Chris Buttars: Quote: "Homosexuality will always be a sexual perversion. And you say that around here now and everybody goes nuts. But I don't care. They're mean. They want to talk about being nice. They're the meanest buggers I have ever seen. It's just like the Muslims. Muslims are good people and their religion is anti-war. But it’s been taken over by the radical side. What is the morals of a gay person? You can't answer that because anything goes. They're probably the greatest threat to America going down I know of."

Can you provide a link for this quote? It's not available on the site you linked.

The GOP in Utah caved in to the "political correctness crowd" and removed this guy's committee assignments. Bunch of liberal pansies!

They removed him to avoid the controversy, but added: "I want the citizens of Utah to know that the Utah Senate stands behind Senator Buttars right to speak, we stand behind him as one of our colleagues and his right to serve this state," said Senate President Michael Waddoups, R-Taylorsville. "He is a senator who represents the point of view of many of his constituents and many of ours. We agree with many of the things he said. . . . We stand four square behind his right [to say what he wants]." Which things do they agree with, I wonder.

I wish nuclear fallout was more containable so we can send all but certain parts of that state back to Joseph Smith's era in a rain of bullshit and radiation.

Re: Dems in Utah call GOP's bluff on gay rights
It's not just Utah.
Colorado State Senator Scott Renfroe:
“I’m not saying this (homosexuality) is the only sin that’s out there. We have murder. We have all sorts of sin. We have adultery. And we don’t make laws making those legal, and we would never think to make murder legal.â€Â
He also said that women were created by God to be helpers for men.
Oh, and adultery is not illegal.
