It's all Harper's fault. God, I hate him.

Peace,
Mike

Looks like Harper played this game well.

Reports today really are turning point in the Canadian economy.

For Months people have been saying the economy is heading south, but numbers still showed job growth. Now however the numbers are now showing 70,000 jobs lost in Canada in Novemeber, mostly all in my province of Ontario and 80% were all in manufacturing. The Finance sector in Canada will remain strong in Canada, as Canadian banks are buying American banks for nothing.

If Harper did not suspend Parliament and this news arrived, he would have been defeated easily.

Yeah, it's pretty sad.

Harper's strategy of repeating lies until they are widely accepted as truths has worked pretty well.

anyway, if i was the coalition i would just wait until the end of January. in the meantime, the economy is just going to keep getting worse in Canada.

Easier said than done. There is a lot of infighting going on within the official opposition on who should lead and whether the current leader (who has already commited to step down in May) is equipped to lead.

All of this could have worked under better circumstances. However, I'm affraid the opposition parties have too many things to sort out amongst themselves at the moment.

Stephane Dion announced he will step down once a new leader is chosen, which could be this week. Michael Ignatieff seems to be the leading candidate at this point, with the only other option being Bob Rae. But Ignatieff seems to have more support than Rae.

I like Dion. He's likely a good man. But nothing seemed to work right, and even though some of the missteps along the way weren't likely his fault, he was the leader so he logically takes the blame. I doubt he would've made it farther than the May leadership convention, so get it out of the way now and move forward with someone else.

Anyone know anything about Ignatieff that can fill me in on him? Good choice? Bad choice?

I dunno much about Ignatieff the leader but he always came off to me as one of those scummy politician types. I sure didn't envision him being PM when I watched Dion's comeback at the liberal convention a while back. Other than that I'm irrelevant on him.

Igantieff is your classic old school Liberal Party Type. You may have noticed that the liberals have been shifting to the Left lately and Igantieff is a centrist guy. He had backward opinions on Iraq and was an intellectual who spend a lot of his life in America.

Igantieff is their best choice as he is a centrist politician who would never think of crazy leftist ideas like the Carbon Tax. Plus he is very smart and articulate man and he imo could really challenge Harper in terms of "PM Material" and would imo play very well in the Suburban areas where the liberals are hurting.
A poll came out today showing a 38-33% Tory-Liberal election if Igantieff was leader and a 42-22% poll if Dion is leader. Polls are only polls but come on, it appears support for THE NDP is soft, if you have a decent Liberal, like in the Jean Chretien Days.

Clearly shows Igantieff has some traction with Canadians and imo he will bring the Liberal party back to the centre where it belongs and will go out of the coalition. We shall soon see the decline of the NDP Party now as you have a real solid voice for the centre-left where a lot of NDP support is now strangely.

Igantieff though imo will at least get 90-100 seats for the liberals and with the Tories dead in Quebec, It appears it is near impossible for Harper to get his majority now.

I think Igantieff faults are that he is to much of a sleazy type and is a "elitist" type and we could see a lot of anti-intellectualism sentiment launched against him by the Conservatives. However unlike Dion, Igantieff can at least fight back.

Know I think the situation in Ottawa will chill out as I think Igantieff wants to get re-build the party and get some money before going against the Conservatives who have almost endless money for elections.

Harper imo I think has met his match. We will now see a real fight between two strong men.

Rae is a good man, but he is far to leftist and really unpopular in Ontario and the Liberals cannot afford to lose seats there.

What do you mean by "sleazy"? His (previous) positions on Iraq may have been out of the mainstream, but I don't recall hearing anything about him that was any way unethical.

I agree, I think he can do a much better job at hitting back than Dion. He also comes across as more intelligent than pretty much anyone in the Liberal Party right now. However, I'm not sure if he can win the hearts and minds of most Canadians. I think the whole living in the USA for most of his life still rubs a lot of people the wrong way.

I can already picture the Conservative attack ads.

that is why I doubt he can win, but imo unlike Dion, he will be able to respond to such ads ^^^

Can win the hearts and mind, no one is winning that battle from either side imo.
