No, that's an incorrect way of looking at it. Obama's views are much closer to Jackson and Sharpton than Keyes. By the way, so are Hillary Clinton's views. 93% of black Democrats would vote for Hillary vs. 96% for Obama. They BOTH have views that support helping the black community, whereas Keyes is another Clarence Thomas sell-out. The only thing that is white about Obama is the fact that he's 50% white ethnically and was raised by a white mother and white grandparents after his dad abandoned him. But if we can say Clinton stands up for blacks as a white person, then we can easily say that Obama stands up for blacks as a mixed race person.

Racist much?

Here we go.. how is that racist??

The man is mixed. So if we're gonna talk about race, let's get it accurate. He's not white or black. He's of mixed race. Being of a mixed background, I fail to see how any one part of him can suddenly become the make or break of a person. I don't think Obama is where he is because he is half-Black, nor do I think he would be in a better place if he were fully white. It's all non-sense talk really.

BUT... the reality is that people, of ALL races, do buy into this crap. So there are whites, blacks, latinos, asians, and smurfs who think he is where he is only because he's black, despite the fact that he's of mixed race. And there are whites, blacks, Latinos, asians, and smurfs who ARE supporting him because he's Black, even though he's of mixed race. Percentage of each doesn't matter because both gourps of people are retarded.

While some 80 y/o Latina granny from Texas hates Obama's skin color and has thus decided to vote for another, it doesn't shed any light whatsoever as to how a 20-something first-generation lationo college grad is going to vote.

I don't dislike Obama because of his skin color, his lack of "blackness," his mixed heritage, etc. I am not voting for him because I simply don't like his rhetoric. Pure and simple.

I understand he had a black father and a white mother.

His skin is dark. Thus, he got more of his father's genes. But he was raised by his mother, so he got her personality.

But he is black. And partially white.

I thought Edwards 2004 was very charismatic, I really enjoyed listening to him, even though I disagreed with a lot of his policies. Edwards 2008, not so much.

All this discussion goes to show that we do not at the present possess a language adequate enough to account for what is becoming an increasingly different culture. The America with its traditional ideas of race is quickly giving way to something entirely different. Not to say that racism will not be an issue, but it's going to be an entirely different issue. If race is an issue with respect to Obama, then it's largely so because he signals and symbolizes more clearly than anyone or anything else a change in conceptions of race. Ultimately, it has more to do with him signaling change than him being of a particular race.

Post Re: If Obama wasn't black ...
Obama is where he is because:

(a) he is a great leader. I'm sorry, but campaigns are just as much about how well you can organize a team, plan campaign strategy, and not make mistakes along the way as it is the product you are selling. It takes a good leader to be able to do all that. Hillary's campaign has made quite a few mistakes along the way (not organizing in half the states, for instance) by comparison.

(b) he has charisma. I don't think anyone will deny this, and people who downplay this as if it is unimportant don't understand politics and, honestly, life. People with charisma get more done in life. I know some lawyers, for instance, who are absolute geniuses -- they know the law backwards and forwards -- but nobody likes them and they put juries to sleep. Charisma and the ability to inspire are tremendously important for a leader.

This is offset by his many negatives. I mean, seriously, I can imagine the following conversation taking place a few years ago between political consultants:

"OK, we have this guy who wants to run for President. He's charismatic and a great leader."

"Sounds great. Any negatives?"

"Well, yes, he's black."

"Not good. Do the names Jackson, Sharpton, and Mosely-Braun mean anything to you? I have study after study showing that his race will hurt him overall, especially in the deep south."

"Yeah, but we can overcome that. This guy's good, I tell you."

"OK, any other negatives?"

"Well, there's his name. Obama."

"What, are you kidding? No one will vote for a guy whose name sounds like a muslim terrorist. Ah well, maybe we can emphasize his first name. What's that?"

"Barack."

(long silence). "OK, I got it! We'll do like Romney and use his middle name! What is it?"

"Hussein."

(longer silence) "You're crazy. No one is going to elect a black President named Barack Hussein Obama! Give up now!"

Obama is where he is now because (a) he is a good leader; (b) he is charismatic; and (c) people in America aren't as racist as you may think.

BUT if he were a white guy named John Smith, he would be the nominee by now.

Agreed, Edwards this time around just failed to come across.

Its a shame he lost to Kerry the first time around, Kerry has as much charisma as a popiscle stick.

This isn't all true. The best lawyers I know and work with have gotten a ton done with almost zero charisma.
John Keker- No Charisma
Alan Ruby-No Charisma
James Brosnahan-Definitely No Charisma
Bill Price- No Charisma
John Quinn-No Charisma

But they know the law like you wouldn't believe and in Alan Ruby's Case he has a perfect photographic memory.

Of course charismatic lawyers go a long way for making up for debate skills and knowledge or even a case. There are many lawyers who do have a ton of charisma.

Anyways believe it or not Bush Jr actually has a ton of charisma and he also claimed ot work with both sides in his first election. Yes I do push away charismatics if that is all the have and that takes a lot to convince me. It took 2 tries at the presidency for Edwards to convince me he was the best candidate(he isn't running anymore unfortuantely).

If Charisma is all you care about than you also had Huckabee running on the Republican side that guy is also charismatic but he would never have beat Clinton, Obmama and he didn't beat McCain who has zero Charisma himself. Note I actually think that McCain would make a good president but I can't sway my issues to him because I disagree with a lot of his world views. Nixon got a lot done despite a lack of Charisma and an over arching reach for power.

The thread's still going on? Look here I think you Eagle wouldnt have created the thread because you were expecting that being black would have hindered Obama alot in the beginning but as it turned out a few months later that he is leading over Hillary. Its not something that I believe is necessarly true. Its pretty much being damned if you do and damned if you dont but Obama has no choice in the color of his skin

Yes, exactly, thank you for putting those words in my mouth. That is indeed the only thing that matters. Complete idiots who have charisma should be elected, that is exactly what I was saying in my earlier thread, only I used words that indicated the exact opposite. How nice of you to understand what I meant.

Charisma has nothign to do with being smart or being an idiot. It can only carry you so far when trying to get stuff done. Also people with great charisma as you put usually have just as many people who hate them.

Also your negative section is very funny but Obama does have negatives and I have also discussed that earlier. No they aren't he is black. He is a true politician. He is not afraid to talk about issues generally but he is afraid to atach his name to politically senstive votes but actually voting.

All this is moot as I will be voting for either Obama or Hillary come the fall election. I do think that either one will be a good president and all of the candidates including McCain will defintiely be better than Bush. What I find funny thoughis the number of Obama supporters who are now calling Hillary evil even when before a lot of them liked her(maybe didn't want to vote for her).

I've been calling a spade a spade since BOTH clinton and obama entered the race.

Karl gets shit because people are so happy to use the whole racial argument when it works for them, but so willing to call another an idiot when it doesn't. political correctness and calling someone racist really only applies as long as the argument doesn't support you in some way .. or your opinions

Err Obama=Edwards? WTF, people? Yes, both of them have empty messages and an a "throwing money at a problem fixes it" attitude, but Obama as a speaker and as an engaging personality is leaps and bounds above Edwards. Edwards was easy to hate, for a libertarian like me. It's impossible to hate Obama. That's why he'll probably be America's next president, and not because he's black.

For the record, I can't stand his politics.

If he wasn't black, he would be about where he is now. He might rack up 60% rather than 90% margins among black voters, but there would be no Muslim, Farrakhan, or Wright smears to deal with.

"Everybody's saying the same thing: Hillary or Obama? A black man or a white woman? It's so hard to make up my mind! Like it's a suffering contest. And even if it was, how can you compare the suffering of a white woman to the suffering of a black man? I mean, white women burned their bras. Black men were burned alive!"
