David Lean is old school in the bad way.

Wong Kar-wai would make a better painter than a filmmaker - - his tedious melodramas might better be called melotorpors.

The Truman Show had a great concept but weak execution - - the WOKJ forum is a much more convincing artificial reality.

why the fuck is 'bergman-inspired' a characteristic used to complement allen...when bergman isn't even on this fucking list?

Because it sounds sophisticated.

It's not so far out there to think of a director who had unique and interesting qualities in his work, but who remained flawed for a variety of other reasons. Then someone comes along, is inspired by those qualities, takes them and runs with them, but without the same trappings that ensnared the initial director.

Now I have no idea if this applies in this instance, but you can certainly be inspired by a director and still surpass his quality of work.

Because he obviously lifts from Bergman a lot, and in fact the first time I heard of Bergman was when I was became obsessed with Woody Allen when I was 12 or 13. It was just a throwaway reference, and I regret including it now.

As for why Bergman isn't on the list: I haven't seen all of his many, many movies, for one. I've only seen seven.
