Here we go, it is officially on like Donkey Kong.

She claims her contract called for exclusive theatrical distribution. We will see what happens.

Yep. She's not going to get $50 million, but she'll get a very nice settlement.

If Disney did indeed go against her contract then yeah, they deserve this.

Good for her. She waited ten years to finally get her bag and absolutely deserves it.

Disney's rather hostile response to this, I think, suggests Johansson has a pretty easy case here. It's a pretty big decision to sue Disney, so I doubt she would have done so without a clear case.

Emma Stone and Emily Blunt are also considering their options against Disney now as well, based on rumors, so it'll be interesting to see if they move forward or not.

And in general, I wonder if this opens the door for a lot of actors to take legal action against Disney (or other studios) if their contracts were broken in similar fashion as well (past, present, and future).

Make no mistake, this is probably one of the most important legal cases for the entertainment industry. Apparently she already turned down a big payout to avoid going public. Disney's argument is pretty weak. Bravo to Scarjo, I can already see the headlines if this turns south "From Black Widow to Black Listed"

Disney gets 85% of the profits of PA, so if it makes 300 WW (Which its on track for) there is obviously more money from even a hyped theatrical release.

Well, if they breached the contraxt, well yeah, go ScarJo.

This will set the precedent if she manages to slay the beast.

I can only imagine how much disney was willing to pay her to shut up and yet she declined. Thats a boss ass move

Chapek fuck ups continue. No way Bob Iger would have let this happen.

If Disney violated the contract then yea, go ScarJo! I wonder what impact, if any, this will have on the releases for Eternals, James Bond and Spiderman, if say, the Delta variant tempts the studios to roll out the films in premium streaming at the same time.

Disney and other studios will need to make it clear upfront in future contracts what the rollout strategy will be. They'll need to commit from the beginning whether the film will 1) have an exclusive theatrical window or 2) go hybrid.

This potentially gives A-listers for the franchise films more leverage in pushing for an exclusive theatrical window which can impact bottom lines in a depressed theatrical market. I can see a situation where it's financially better for the movie to open in theaters AND through premium streaming at the same time, but the actors' contracts won't allow it.

Emma Stone and Emily Blunt may be next in line. I think they deserve it as well, but it's a bigger risk for them. ScarJo doesn't have to ever work with Disney again if she does not want to, while Emma and Blunt have huge projects with them on the horizon. Is getting your bag for Jungle Cruise really worth losing the much (MUCH) bigger bag you would get for Fantastic Four?

I don’t think Blunt has any interest in the superhero genre. She’s gone into great length on why she didn’t do Black Widow. And honestly letting something slide is never good business practice, and most likely The Rock would get in on that before either of them. That’s the name to look for. And with Hobbs and Shaw doing better than F9 (Pandemic be dammed) Disney would not want to lose him. ScarJo had a very specific theater contract with MCU and she’s definitely getting screwed. Disney using the “you’re doing better than everyone in the pandemic” argument while true, doesn’t hold much water.

They didn't even mention anything about the contract, which this is ALL ABOUT! :funny: just tells everyone they fucked up big time! and talks that the golden goose himself Kevin Feige is not happy with the heads at Disney as well. This is huge!

Bob Chapek, in a little over a year since he became CEO, is already burning the house that Big Bob Iger built! #RemoveChapek

Get your money ScarJo. Disney is too powerful and needs to be taken down a peg or two.

They chose to renegotiate with The Rock for his movie Jungle Cruise going to D+ same time as theaters, BUT NOT SCARJO? YOUR TALENT PARTNER IN 9 MCU FILMS! WTF!!! FUCK Disney heads!!!

Emma Stone signs for Cruella sequel so I'm guessing no court case from her end, specially with a promise of sequel.

And she wins an additional 20m and gets to move forward with Tower of Terror.

Good for her, and a good sign for talent in the streaming era

It's not really ScarJo related but this or the Turning Red thread chatting about it.

Bob Chapek (Disney's CEO) just let go their TV chief. Seeing the muddled Disney+/theatrical experiment, ScarJo, exec turnover, and with Chapek's contract up for renewal in a few months, where is this going? Is Iger going to eventually need to come back? Peter Rice was well liked in the creative community, is Disney going to send creatives over to other studios as it gets too reliance on Marvel?

Bob Iger is not coming back. If they do let Chapek go than it'll be Susan E. Arnold who takes the job I believe. She's been on the Disney board 14 years and is currently the Chairman of the Board. She's the obvious choice to take over. I doubt they fire Chapek though.

...welp. :whaa:

Iger is back. Felt inevitable.

Called it 8 days ago. Didn't think it would happen this quickly but the earnings report was attrocious.

MCU, Pixar, SW, Disney Animation all felt it needed stronger direction and were getting to be a mess...feel like Wall Street will react very well to this news!

Also Iger is back for a 2 year term with the aim to find a successor.

Would not be shocked if Sheryl Sandberg makes a play for this one. Her legacy has been impacted by Meta's downhill drop the last few years and Iger her I believe have been in some similar circles. Could see her in the running as a dark horse early pick!
