In honour of its 20th anniversary, what are you feelings on The Phantom Menace? I vote good - I find it memorable/unique compared to the recent Star Wars

More bad than good.

Some poor dialogue and special effects* (even for 1999, honestly) aside, I've always thought it was fine.

*Namely the Battle of Naboo.

Unedited I can barely watch it.
If the bad things were cut from it then it would good.

Compared to the original trilogy bad but compared to the vast majority of similar blockbusters awesome.

there's a lot in this movie that is BAD but overall I'll take it, it's GOOD. Plus I was 14 when it came out, how can I not like it?

Considering every main character is meant to be emotionless or straight up annoying, it's still strong entertainment. I think Lucas played it too safe. I think had Anakin started off older it would have made a huge difference. Also they should have used Wookies instead of the Gungans. it could have made their arc especially in Sith getting wiped out that much more interesting, and it would have been a more interesting dynamic with Amadala and their planet looking down on them.

I think those two little things would have really helped the tone. But I still like this one more than Clones.

It is dog shit.

Not very good.

The pod chase scene and Dart Maul light sabre battle are good though.

That said, i'd take it over Attack of the Clones.

SW apologists always talk about the Darth Maul fight. But it's only a couple of minutes long, and it's not THAT good to wait two hours to see. MadGez is right about Attack of the Clones, though. The Phantom Menace is dog shit, but at least it's fresh dog shit (so it still has warmth going for it). Attack of the Clones is dried grey dog shit that's been left there to decompose for months.

I have no issues with TPM. If you like the Star Wars series in general they are no worse or better than the OG trilogy and in my opinion it's definitely better than the current trilogy.

I'd take the new trilogy (so far) over the prequels.

The visuals alone hurt the prequels (way too much CGI).

One of the core issues of TPM is also the little amount of time Maul is given.

Good analogy!

Yeah, that always annoyed me too. He's given a few glimpses throughout. A glance here, a short desert fight there, and all-in-all it's about 4 minutes of screen time. Then it's that finale. Lucas totally wasted the best looking villain the SW universe.

Definitely not enough. I recall a lot of the marketing was based around Maul being the "big bad". Early on I (and many others) thought he'd be the prequels equivalent of Vader which clearly wasn't the case.

So to see him cameo as a cool looking henchman was a problem.

What I remember most fondly of the whole Phantom Menace event were how the hype and build up had a bigger cultural impact than the film it self. From teasers and trailers that ere events in themselves to the long lines of people camping out all night to get tickets. Memorable.

Three years later - the hype was nowhere near the same for Clones as it was overshadowed by not only Spider-man but also LOTR.
