James Cameron says Wonder Woman is a step backwards for female protagonists

The social justice warriors are going to hate having the truth pointed out to them by Cameron.

Quote:
"All of the self-congratulatory back-patting Hollywood’s been doing over Wonder Woman has been so misguided. She’s an objectified icon, and it’s just male Hollywood doing the same old thing! I’m not saying I didn’t like the movie but, to me, it’s a step backwards. Sarah Connor was not a beauty icon. She was strong, she was troubled, she was a terrible mother, and she earned the respect of the audience through pure grit. And to me, [the benefit of characters like Sarah] is so obvious. I mean, half the audience is female!

I don’t – I don’t know. There are many women in power in Hollywood and they do get to guide and shape what films get made. I think – no, I can’t account for it. Because how many times do I have to demonstrate the same thing over again? I feel like I’m shouting in a wind tunnel!"

Cameron is always right, except for his endorsement on Terminator Genisys.

SJWs will love this, what are you talking about? They scour the Internet looking for things to trigger their Tweets.

"Boo hoo! Wonder Woman is hotter and better than the average woman! She should be obese with blue hair and hate men!"

Quote:
Patty Jenkins’ response to James Cameron.....“James Cameron's inability to understand what Wonder Woman is, or stands for, to women all over the world is unsurprising as, though he is a great filmmaker, he is not a woman. Strong women are great. His praise for my film Monster, and our portrayal of a strong yet damaged woman was so appreciated. But if women have to always be hard, tough and troubled to be strong, and we aren't free to be multidimensional or celebrate an icon of women everywhere because she is attractive and loving, then we haven't come very far have we. I believe women can and should be EVERYTHING just like male lead characters should be. There is no right and wrong kind of powerful woman. And the massive female audience who made the film a hit it is, can surely choose and judge their own icons of progress.”

It would have been better if she had just ignored what he said. This back-and-forth in the media is so infantile. It's like something the US President would do on Twitter, not normal people.

Do people actually think WW did something for women? Part of the movies charm is how unimpactful it is.

If that was the case, why aren't any women stepping up? Cameron would have been crushed in an hour.

And also fuck Cameron. The whole thing is ludicrous. Make your next film already. Why is he even commenting?

Wow, look at the gender binarist binarsplaining to the gender spectrum what gender identity means.

I bet Chippy wishes he did not say he would no longer post. This topic is right up his alley.

Back down from what? I wasn't the ones mansplaining that Groucho was referring to, I was adding to his and my point.

If only we knew what it was like to be married to a man who knocks other films for their portrayal of women while touting their own ability to portray strong, independent females on screen! Wait, let me check out if Joss Whedon's ex has anything to say about it...

Yeah James.....the world needs more addict single mothers with violence issues like Sarah Connor.

Wonder Woman is only good for women because it has "Woman" in the title. Otherwise, it's no different than any other film about women. She was only powerful because she has superpowers, and she is pretty. She has no personality, and is mostly the butt of every awkward joke. Is that really empowering for women in 2017? The film and its subsequent buzz was all a bit of a con really. Females felt forced to support it because it's a female superhero film made by a female.

There you go, Groucho. ;)

While there always has been a weird kinkiness to Wonder Woman, DC has so much more female representation in its lore than the "socially progressive" Marvel outside of X-Men. This just reeks of jealousy.

Because when people don't notice, they really don't want female superheroes. When they are forced (made to feel guilty) to care, then we get Wonder Woman making $400m.

The fact that it's a good movie has nothing to do with it, of course.

I blogged about this when the film came out.

Fury Road, Wonder Woman, Force Awakens, I think we can stop with the novelty argument, it's becoming the norm the last couple of years
