It's definitely in the discussion, but I would say Avatar was more influential. The Dark Knight influenced filmmakers to make more dark, realistic superhero films, but Avatar started the 3D craze and influenced the world accept 3D films (before that, it was just red/blue cardboard glasses).

I mean, Iron Man came out first. And he's still pretty much shaping the system, so much as major studio crossovers that seemed impossible years ago. You don't get a film like Deadpool which in turn brought us Logan (Which kicks TDK's ass) And TDK is really just doing what Spiderman 2 did earlier. It's the ever growing "take superheros more serious and you will make massive amounts of money" argument, and that all goes back to Superman The Movie or the twisted craziness of Batman Returns.

BB is more influential then TDK any day of the week. They are all great though. I love the mixing of them for TDKR.

I dont think BB is as influential as it is now considered if TDK doesn't explode like it did. BB was awesome and very influential as well, however it was a different way. TDK is still quoted and Joker faces are present in mainstream pop culture to this day despite being 9 years old. Hard to say if that would have been the case had Ledger lived and the film been robbed of much of the deafening hype surrounding his performance, but still.

Everybody says "TDK set the trend of dark and serious blah blah blah". But it's more like it transcended genres to a greater degree than any previous comic book effort. It was a piece of contemporary social commentary.

Comic books have been influential for all the 2000s, from xmen to Spiderman to BB to TDK and Avengers. While Spidey and Avengers were massive, neither sold as many domestic tickets as TDK, nor did the Academy Awards suffer such an extreme backlash when they failed to nominate it for BP that the rules were changed and the opening ceremony joked about the absurdity of it missing.

Avatar did jumpstart the 3D trend but if there's a large Pop culture front print, it sure isn't overly visible.

The Avengers is fun and witty, but damn does it have bland filmmaking. I want so badly to put Batman Returns there, but I am not so sure, The Avengers is a lot of fun.
