| Post subject: | What movie cliches are unrealistic in real life and why? |
I'll start: After an argument the person says "Wait, let me explain" then the other storms out before he/she is able to explain the situation. In real life I would immediately try to clarify the issue. There wouldn't be a moment of silence after "let me explain". I would follow her if she stormed off.  What are other cliches and why is it unrealistic?

Action films often show people hiding behind a car door or a piece of wood (such as a door), or even a dead person, during shootouts. And the indication is this saves them. Wouldn't bullets, particularly from a higher caliber gun or an automatic weapon, easily rip through these? |

Bullets go through doors and dead people, but I'd rather be behind a car door and be saved by a ricochet or diverted round than get a direct bullet to the head, wouldn't you? |

The thing I hate in movies is when someone is just about to explain something, perhaps it's derogatory of the person with them, and that person stops them from saying it and says "what?", to emphasise how bad it's going to be. I always thought that if you really want to know, just shut up and that person will just continue talking. |

Sure. And I imagine a big enough object could be very useful in the sense the people shooting at you cannot directly see you. But moments in which a person grabs a dead body and drags it in front of them as he or she goes for cover, as their opponents unload machine guns nearby, are surely unrealistic. The bullets would rip right through the flesh-and-blood corpse and the person behind it. |

If bullets are actually hitting the dead body, then fair enough, it's unrealistic that the person on the other side remains unscathed. Unless all the bullets get lodged in the bones of the dead guy.

People will always let distraught or angry people go into another room that always has a window to crawl out of. Also that shot of the open window with the breeze blowing the curtain slightly. |

People not taking off their shoes when they enter home. Why would I still keep my dirty shoes from outside on when I'm walking through my home, lying on my couch/bed...? I'm wondering that for years now. |

People never say "bye" when they answer the phone, and they rarely say "hello" either. They just pick up and talk and hang up. I don't know about you Yankees, but in the UK (and everywhere else I've been), we always say "bye" or some variation on that. |

In movies, they are trying to show us that they are ultra coooooooooooooooool, so they just hang up. Or...bad screenwriting.

Any romantic comedy where the lead has a gigantic NYC apartment and works as an assistant or something (I see you 27 Dresses). You'd realistically be living in a shoebox. |

I guess I just don't care? I mean, the floor of my house, even if I were to remove my shoes as soon as I enter, would still be dirty. It's probably more of an American laziness thing. Or that I don't care about getting my apartment floor dirty. Maybe when I buy another house, I'll start. |

I wear my shoes unless I'm laying down, etc. Also it's not like I'm dancing around in raw sewage before I'd enter my apartment. If they are dirty, of course you take them off before. I don't think I've ever seen anyone in my life pull a Rick James "Fuck yo couch" moment. Do you put on slippers Riggs? |
