 Fifth "Bourne" acquires writer
Quote: The legacy of Jason Bourne will continue… but likely without Jason Bourne.
Universal has hired screenwriter Anthony Peckham (Sherlock Holmes) to pen the next chapter in the Bourne franchise, which will remain focused on Jeremy Renner’s drug-enhanced super-soldier, Aaron Cross. (Deadline initially reported the news.) Renner took the reins from Matt Damon after the original Bourne trilogy concluded with 2007′s Bourne Ultimatum. Last year’s Bourne Legacy, which pitted Cross against Edward Norton’s shady government handler, was a modest hit, grossing $276 million worldwide. Though that didn’t equal Damon’s output in Ultimatum ($443 million), it was more than the original 2002 franchise-starter.
Producer Frank Marshall has frequently mentioned his wish to unite Damon and Renner in a Bourne film, but it remains unclear how the politics would work. (Damon has repeatedly insisted he won’t do another Bourne without director Paul Greengrass, and he doesn’t have the best relationship with Legacy director Tony Gilroy.) There’s some hope, since Peckham wrote the script for Invictus, which earned Damon an Oscar nomination, and the new Bourne installment — The Bourne Infinity? The Bourne Ubiquity? — didn’t immediately announce a director… Stay tuned. http://insidemovies.ew.com/2013/08/02/b ... cy-sequel/Good news. I do hope Damon returns to the franchise in the future, but I love The Bourne Legacy and will be more than satisfied to see the franchise continue with Renner's Aaron Cross as the focal point.

 Re: Fifth "Bourne" acquires writer
Sounds like a bad idea, when a movie studio clutches at straws to make a franchise continue despite all the leading players declining the invitation to work on it with them.

It felt more like a build-up to a finale, not the actual end. I was disappointed by that, but overall the movie was fine in a non-Bourne kind of way.

The film was fine with good action and intense sequences but that chase scene was ridiculous. Trim that and I'd like it much more. Im game for the sequel though.

 Re: Fifth "Bourne" acquires writer
Justin Lin is going to direct the fifth film: http://variety.com/2013/film/news/unive ... 200751825/"Renner is expected to return as the title character." Nice job, Variety. Anyway, I am not a fan of his because I am ambivalent toward the Fast/Furious franchise, but we shall see. This is my favorite franchise, Legacy included, so I will hope for the best, even though this news does not fill me with confidence. I suspect this will be the final Bourne film unless Damon and Greengrass decide to return in the future.

 Re: Fifth "Bourne" acquires writer
True, but at the same time, it kinda pointa out the ridiculousness of keeping "Bourne" as part of the title.

What I've heard is that Lin approached Uni with a concept (instead of the other way around) and has been wanting a crack at the franchise for a while. I'm pretty excited for it, actually.

 Re: Fifth "Bourne" acquires writer
If true, my confidence is definitely boosted, at least slightly. Him possessing a genuine desire to visit the Bourne universe is a much neater idea than him just being a rote in-house directorial hire.

I'm curious to see what happens with Peckham (he was hired before Lin was even a blip on the radar).

Any chance they might spend some of the budget on a tripod?

The Bourne Legacy did not have much overt hand-held photography.

Yep, and since that's not Lin's style either - it's safe to say little to no shaky cam.

 Re: Fifth "Bourne" acquires writer
As I mentioned ages ago, I really didn't expect Peckham to stay involved (because Lin brought his own story to the table) and now he's not. Andrew Baldwin (Bastille Day, The Outsider) will pen the script.

Is anyone excited for this? This feels like an inevitable $70m-ish grossing film that absolutely nobody remembers a year later.

I think.

I read that quickly as "I will suck off Damon if he doesn't return".

 Re: Fifth "Bourne" acquires writer
Talked to my Universal friend last night about the Damon rumors and he said he has no idea what's happening now, only that the year delay surprised him. Last he heard: they were still going with Lin's story and the title I'd heard previously (which offers a huge clue to the storyline). But shit can change fast out there.
If Damon is coming back, the year delay would make sense because Lin's original concept probably won't work with Jason Bourne as the lead. My friend said that he thinks Lin wouldn't give a fuck in the long run because he'd really like to direct Damon.

 Re: Fifth "Bourne" acquires writer
I'd be surprised, though. Damon said that he'd be back, but only if Greengrass is back.

 Re: Fifth "Bourne" acquires writer
My gut is that he isn't, but lord knows. If Damon only wants Greengrass and won't work with Lin, Universal is in a weird position because they sure as hell aren't going to do something that would upset Justin Lin.
