 Thegun's Top 20 Sequels Never Made #4 and 3

Now granted, I am in the camp that most sequels fail to impress, but sometimes films are entertaining, are good size hits, and seem like a good bet for a sequel. Yet years and years go by and they just never come. So here are my picks for the top 15 sequels never made. Some came close, others could only exist in alternate realities (That'll make sense later on) and others are just missed opportunities. Of course, others could just be terrible ideas, but I would have enjoyed a sequel none the less. Feel free to post your own choices throughout.

Re: Thegun's Top 15 Sequels Never Made
My choices would definitely include an adaptation of Ripley Under Ground (or another Patricia Highsmith Ripley novel) with Matt Damon and an adaptation of The Vampire Lestat and/or The Queen of the Damned with Tom Cruise in the lead role and Neil Jordan at the helm. Also: a third Bond film with Timothy Dalton and a second Daredevil with Ben Affleck (but with a more gifted director, a more modest budget, a more foreboding tone, and an R rating).
A second Sky Captain is definitely high on the list of completely unjustifiable sequels I would still love to see. The same goes for another Judge Dredd film with Karl Urban.
This isn't necessary, but it would be fun to see Guy Ritchie revisit characters from Lock, Stock... or Snatch in the future.

20. Goonies 2: Goonies Never Say DieThis seems like a good spot to start. It's light and a relatively harmless idea. For most of us on here, this film is the very definition of a childhood favorite. And today, I laugh and enjoy it even more. It was a solid film, and like most of us, its a brisk adventure film with a solid ensemble cast. They tried for years to make a sequel most recently in the last 3 years, and now there is even talks of a confirmed musical play being produced. In my opinion, I'm not a huge fan of reunion sequels, but at the same time, I find Josh Brolin and Sean Austin are so much better actors (And in most circles very good) and Feldman and Plimpton have maintained very interesting careers over the years. I'm not saying the film itself would be amazing. But with Spielberg still attached, a family dynamic and another strong adventure film, with a nice ensemble of character actors, there's no reason it couldn't have at least be a fun movie. Granted, it's still not something I'm completely clamoring for, but it was either this or Mrs. Doubtfire 2, and let's be honest. Who else didn't sigh in relief when that dead horse of a rumor didn't finally die.

Demolition Man 2 was rumoured for a while. As was Cobra 2 and True Lies 2. All would have been excellent.

19. Stargate 2 and 3I guess a little film called Independence Day made Emmerich's followup to his first cult sci fi hit Universal Soldier, kind of lost in the shuffle, but Stargate was a always an interesting idea that even if a direct sequel couldn't be made, there were many possibilities. The film itself made almost 200 million WW in theaters, was decently received by critics, and well received by audiences. At the time, it held the October opening weekend record for 4 years. Emmerich and Devlin had always planned the film to be the start of a trilogy, but it just never came to fruition. Instead we got too television spinoffs that were supposedly ok (Never watched them) and Emmerich went to the top of sought after director's list. Still much like the supposed sequel to Independence Day (Personally I think that's a terrible idea) the rumors of a live action Stargate followup never seem to die, most recently coming back up in 2007, as a legit followup even with Russell and Spader returning (Though Spader 94 and Spader today really are two different people if you ask me) I think there was a lot of potential to build on what was good about the first film and add to it. Hell even from a 3D standpoint I think it would be a cool use of the format when traveling through the gate.

I always liked Stargate, even if it wasn't amazing, but I liked Kurt Russell's character. Wearing that beret was so cool, and probably why I like roles like John Spartan, Lee Christmas and Barney Ross. Wouldn't have liked to see a sequel though.

18. The Brazilian JobThe Italian Job was a remake, but also a fast paced, highly entertaining and very successful surprise hit from 2003, some may call it a B rate Ocean's Eleven, but it's A rate entertainment all the way. A sequel, named Brazilian Job, was almost immediately greenlit in 2004, and it immediately fell into development hell. Paramount continues to try at a snails pace and imdb continues to push back it's release date despite no announcement. Now almost 10 years later, everyone in the cast still makes movies, no one really blew up accept maybe Statham a little. Just a simple case of not ever being able to become a priority of Paramount (Who changed heads multiple times.) The original while successful, didn't exactly set the world on fire. I myself enjoyed the first, but wasn't exactly clamoring for a sequel, but if it had come out in say 2005, even 2008, hell even next year, I'd still check it out.

F&F combined with Oceans 11 set in Brazil = Fast Five. Therefore, its doubtful Brazillian Job will ever see the light of day.

Are the posters viewable for you? Each one disappears the day after for me? Did they change the image posting standards on here?
True, but IJ could have had better additions to the cast. I mean they got Norton as the villain. They could have easily added some fun actors as villains and for new additions to the crew that F&F is limited to.

Are you getting the posters from the same site?
Every new sequel you post, the image always says "No hotlinking" on it.

17. BeetleJuice 2I'm not talking about the bullshit "goes to Hawaii" storyline either. As that is pretty much trash. The character of BeetleJuice and afterworld created by Burton and Co. has so much potential to be a really cool film. But for some reason, they just were never able to bring together anything better than a rehash. By the time 1991 came around Burton gave up on it and went directly into Batman Returns, but once in a while you still hear Keaton wanting to do it, Burton wanting to do it, and even the case of them wishing to reboot the character. While a reboot sometime in the future does seem a little more likely, I'd rather a sequel that is entirely different other than Keaton remaining in the character. I think with that makeup job he could still easily pull that character off.

16. The Incredibles 2Pixar has really just lost their minds, making sequels to Monsters Inc and Cars instead of the one film in their portfolio that promised a sequel. I mean I'm not even a huge Pixar fan, but I absolutely loved everything about The Incredibles. It was brilliantly shot, perfectly cast, and the action and humor is right up there with any live action blockbuster. Frankly is was the best (copyright infringement notwithstanding) adaptation to Fantastic Four we could ever hope to see. The sequel could easily have a 100 million opening and do 350 just in the US and that's conservative. I know Bird is now a big time live action director now, but this film should still be a priority for him. Considering Pixar's upcoming lineup, the 10th anniversary will come and go, and still no signs of movement. A real shame.

Bettlejuice did live on as a cartoon series but yeah it probably could have had a sequel.
The Incredibles I totally agree with. I'm sure everyone does. They were already superheroes who had fought villains in the past so where's the sequel to it gosh darn it.

Re: Thegun's Top 20 Sequels Never Made #17 and 16
15. Dick Tracy 2Dick Tracy was an odd film to come out in 1990. A lot of people really didn't know what to make of it. But it did do well, grossing over 100 million, and since then became a big hit on video and one of the few BluRay releases of films over 20 years that I'm excited about. In the onslaught of comic book movies, I think Tracy often gets overlooked, and it's one of the first big screen adaptations that is extremely faithful to it's source material, and extremely entertaining. It's funny, has a superb cast, some of the most catchy musical numbers ever, and feels like your almost watching a comic book come to life. And while other films like Batman and the first two Superman movies are larger in scale and do amazing things effects wise, this film use to just awe me as a child and is just beautiful to look at. A sequel has always been planned, but multiple lawsuits and court issues over the rights made the years just continue move on. Warren Beatty still says the sequel is on it's way. Which my god, I hope he doesn't think he can still do it. As much as I love him, and thought he played the role well, he was pushing the limit in the age barrier 22 years ago. I'd much rather a reboot and would love to see a film of this style be used with today's effects.

Well it was going to be a cheat no matter what, I had 19, but I figured it was worth it to add one more (Tracy) I had it as 15 with some containing multiple entries, but decided to spread it out instead. Doesn't effect the integrity of it though.

Oh Dick Tracy. I really enjoyed that film when it came out. Madonna was good in something, excellent songs and the story was pretty good. This film needs a reboot but it sure would have been good for a sequel back then.

Re: Thegun's Top 20 Sequels Never Made #16 and 15
14. Buttercup's BabyLike most people on here, and pretty much everywhere, The Princess Bride is a well loved classic. Based on the novel by William Goldman, as novel reached more anniversaries, new epilogues and discussion of The Princess Bride sequel, entitled Buttercup's Baby, began to surface. Goldman explains it as massive writer's block, and can't get pass the first chapter. Instead he writes to this day about a fake "legal battle" refusing his permission to tell anymore of the story. Goldman continues to try and write it. Still though, I wish they could have tried to make a sequel and then make a novel afterwards. Not necessarily more of the romance, that in my book is one of the perfect movie romances, but a story about Indigo as the Dread Pirate Roberts or what has been released about Buttercup's Baby could be fun. Of course too much time has passed, and Andre The Giant's perfect casting as Fezzik could not be replaced. Still the even mention of a sequel always gets me going. These characters were awesome and I would have loved to see more. Here is a brief summary of Buttercup's Baby The chapter consists of a disjointed assemblage of stories about the quartet's escape to "One Tree Island", and the eventual kidnapping of Waverly, Westley and Buttercup's daughter, by a skinless-faced "madman" who eventually throws her off a mountainside. The chapter ends with Fezzik, Waverly's appointed babysitter, leaping off the mountain to save her, and then cradling her to preserve her from the impact that seems certain to spell at least Fezzik's doom. Also noteworthy is a flashback to Inigo's past, his training as a swordsman, and his one-time romantic love interest. PS, this would have been much higher for me if there was ever even the hint of a discussion for a sequel. Also The Princess Bride is kind of perfect on it's own, a companion film could ruin it.
