I haven't even seen The Mirror.

I thought you took a Tarkovsky class and assumed you had seen all if not most of his films. my bad.

No, I took a Bergman class.

Sight & Sounds original review of Vertigo. Still not sure how this movie has come so far. I wouldn't even consider it a top 3 Hitchcock.

It's my second favorite Hitchcock after Rebecca.

Psycho, Rear Window and NxNW are better.

The big Four Hitchcock films (vertigo, Psycho, RW and N by NW) are all amazing. Loved each one...

Vertigo has had a strange response...

It was seen as a flop film when it released and then was almost forgotten and then big critics and directors started saying "watch this film" and people watched and liked it. As time went on it has been considered as one of the best films ever...

"07. The Searchers (John Ford)"

That is a good film but imo the Sergio Leone Westerns are way way better.

It's too bad McCabe & Mrs. Miller didn't get the obligatory Western spot.

imo in terms of public popularity, characters and epic storylines Sergio Leone Westerns Own.
The films are still very popular till this day...

If you do not like the action style of the Man With No Man Trilogy you have a massive Western epic like Once Upon A Time In the West.

There is no more snobby list out there than this.

Regardless of any lists, Vertigo is a fantastic movie!

This and Rear Window are the "WTF" omissions on this list

This list is useless without three Chris Nolan films on it. I can see excluding the Prestige, but Memento, Inception, and TDK should be up there.

I'm serious. Consensus today, like it or not, is that those three films are among the public's top ten

People use Memento in arguments about Nolan as if it's immune to criticism.

There's strong consensus around Nolan's talent and he's officially viewed as the Hitchcock or Spielberg successor. Even the few naysayers (Denby, Lane, Emerson, to name a few) note the overwhelmingly positive opinion. Furthermore, he's one of the only directors today who has a "brand". And Memento, as his debut, is certainly on this pedestal because of its 'creativity' over high budget, stars, etc.

They're one and the same. Internet geeks jizz over Pixar, so does the rest of civilization...

I agree.

The consensus among American boys aged 15-25 is that those are the best three films ever.

They're really not. You overrate the amount of people who have actually seen Memento. In the close-knit group of internet geeks, obviously the percentage is very high. But in the overall public of America, it isn't.

But this is a silly argument anyways cause you're just trolling.

Who's an Internet geek?

People here are just regular people who like movies and use the Internet. We're a little more quantitative. But we're also more 'critical' too. So I think it's safe to say that anything mainstream that is loved here is probably loved moreso by the 'normals'

Well, except that Memento is not Nolan's debut.

I think you're understating how limited the film was

Vertigo took 64 years to climb to the top of the S&S poll - - if TDK, Memento, or Inception are really as good as the kids' say, perhaps they can stand the test of time and come out on top by 2078...

http://www.imdb.com/chart/top?tt0209144

Ranked #34 with 400k votes, more than Godfather 2, T2, and nearly as much as Star Wars and American Beauty.

To be honest, I think more have seen Memento than T2 or, say, Reservoir Dogs among people our age.

Again, I don't view the internet's taste as supremely different; if it has a huge following on IMDB, it will find an audience in America too.

That's true. I still think that if you approached twenty people on the National Mall and asked for their favorite movies, Memento would make the Top 10. And if you want to avoid being viewed as an art snob on, say, your first work day or a first date -- you're better off not talking about Chris Nolan films, especially Memento, if you don't have a positive outlook towards them. Because nine times out of 10, you'll be talking to someone who won't agree.

I mean, there's a reason he was named director of Batman in the first place...
