Tomorrow we have a song about something you should not do at a park, and a song where different seeming people turn out to be not so different.

Well, I should have done my research. I though the book was A Thousand and One Knights and Disney was making a pun talking about Arabian Nights. But they weren't and I was wrong. Today's clues are accurate for sure. #16 will be up once I get back to school.

16. Feed the Birds (Tuppence a Bag) (Mary Poppins, 1964)

Sung by Mary Poppins
Performed by Julie Andrews
Music by Robert B. Sherman Lyrics by Richard M. Sherman
Best Lyric: All around the cathedral the saints and apostles look down as she sells her wares.

This is thee best song in Mary Poppins, hands down. It's not a fun little ditty like most of the songs in the film; it's a serious ballad about the homeless bird woman who lives on the steps of Saint Paul's Church. While the story of the bird woman has little to do with the overall plotline of Mary Poppins (at least as far as I can remember, I've only seen it once in the last few years), it's simple, but affecting. The message of the song, as far as I can tell, is that you shouldn't dismiss people based on first impressions alone, and you should give them a chance (buy their crumbs for a tuppence!). While the story and lyrics of the song are great, the melody is easily the most sumptuous and complex in all of not only the film, but that Disney has ever done. The orchestral part around two thirds of the way through the song where the chorus swells makes all of the hairs on my body stand on end, the chills run deep. I honestly don't know why people ignore this song, it's utterly fantastic.

15. Savages (Pocahontas, 1995))

Sung by Ratcliffe, Powhatan, Kekata, Ben, and Pocahontas
Performed by David Ogden Stiers, Jim Cummings, Billy Connolly and Judy Kuhn
Music by Alan Menken Lyrics by Stephen Schwartz
Best Lyric: Ratcliffe: They're not like you and me, which means they must be evil.

This song has had mixed reviews from critics for its lyrics with many calling them offensive to Native Americans; I can't understand this stance, because the point of the song is to show how the Powhatan Indians and the English settlers really are the same. In a genius bit of animation, the fire reflecting off the faces of the settlers make their skin look red, and the moonlight reflecting off the faces of the Indians make their face look white. The lyrics are appropriately simplistic and direct to illustrate the ridiculousness and ill logic of racism. The differences in each group scare the opposing group to their bones. They have never experienced the culture of the other group, and they feel the need to assert their dominance and ensure they do not have to change their ways. Obviously we know who won in the end, but this sing is appropriately dark, and I honestly can't imagine Disney attempting something this mature again. The music is really good; it most closely resembles The Mob Song from Beauty and the Beast with a chant about killing as its main refrain, but it is different enough that it does not bother me. And part two where Pocahontas sings lines of "Steady as the Beating Drum" over the the main chorus adds an interesting layer to the piece. This song isn't particularly articulate, but it shouldn't be, given its subject matter.

14. The Gospel Truth (Hercules, 1997)

Sung by The Muses
Performed by Lillias White, Cheryl Freeman, LaChanze, Roz Ryan and Vanéese Y. Thomas
Music by Alan Menken Lyrics by David Zippel

Best Lyric: On Mt. Olympus life was neat and smooth as sweet vermouth! Though, honey, it may seem impossible, that's the gospel truth

As I've stated before, I love the Muses in Hercules, and I believe this song is their best one. It is a narration of the events that begin Hercules, starting with the Titanomachy up until Hercules becomes mortal. This is quite a lot of plot to get out of the way in a short amount of time, and the Muses' song helps to both make it understandable and enjoyable. This song introduces the gospel sound that will continue throughout the rest of the film in fantastic fashion, and the animation that accompanies the song is artful, with much of the events playing out on pieces of pottery. Really, this song grabs the viewer right off the bat and gets them immediately invested in the story of Hercules immediately, which is what any opening song should do.

13. Bella Notte (Lady and the Tramp, 1955)

Sung by Tony, Joe and Chorus
Performed by George Givot, Bill Thompson and the Mellomen
Music and Lyrics by Peggy Lee and Sunny Burke

Best Lyric: Tony: Side by side with your loved one, you'll find enchantment here.

Before I get into the complex songs of the top 12, here is our last simple little song from Disney's Golden Age. I've not really much to say about it, other than it has the feel of an absolute classic love song, and should make anyone feel flighty in their stomach. This song is part of why the spaghetti bit is so iconic. The melody is wonderful, and really caps off a wonderful early soundtrack for Disney. So, yeah. Makes me cry.

Tomorrow, we have a song that makes an allusion to a Robert Frost poem, followed by another song where two people sing about the same thing with much different outlooks.

This is taking forever. Surely there cannot be many Disney songs left to choose from, right? It must be easy (for someone following this countdown and with an interest in Disney songs) to determine which likely greats have yet to show up.

I can only think of "Hakuna Matata" and that already featured in the 70s or something. Insane.

12. Just Around the Riverbend (Pocahontas, 1995)

Sung by Pocahontas
Performed by Judy Kuhn
Music by Alan Menken Lyrics by Stephen Schwartz

Best Lyric: Should I choose the smoothest course, steady as the beating drum? Should I marry Kocoum? Is all my dreaming at an end?

Pocahontas has to be the luckiest Disney Princess in that she not only gets on absolutely kickass passionate song, but two. Two that are utterly phenomenal pieces of song writing and orchestration. While "Just Around the Riverbend", is in my opinion, the slightly weaker number, it still ranks high above most of Disney's song output. It is Pocahontas' traditional "I Want" song, which in this case may actually be a detractor as most of the songs that will rank above it are less formulaic in their significance to their movies. The melody absolutely soars; Judy Kuhn sings the hell out of it; it really is the perfect song for riding down a waterfall in a canoe. The sense of excitement and adventure in the song oozes out from every note and lyric. The lyrics also give Pocahontas her strong, nonconformist persona. The scene at the end of the song that evokes Robert Frost's "The Road Not Taken" is particularly powerful. Rather than take the easy path and marry her betrothed, Pocahontas decides it is a better choice to see what lies, well, just around the riverbend.

11. For the First Time in Forever (Frozen, 2013)

Sung by Anna and Elsa
Performed by Kristen Bell and Idina Menzel
Music and Lyrics by Robert Lopez and Kristen Anderson-Lopez

Best Lyric: Anna: Why have a ballroom with no balls?

It's probably no secret that this song was going to rank high on this list. "Let it Go" is great, but this song to me is the one that feels like classic Disney. The verses have a very unique sound that somehow tie seamlessly to the more traditional but still beautiful chorus. Both the characters of Anna and Elsa are developed well in this song; particularly Elsa, as she has so much less to work with. I think it's the only "I Want" song in Disney history that develops two protagonists at once. By the end of the song, their viewpoints on not just the coronation and opening the palace gates, but also their outlooks on life as a whole, are revealed. Anna is sick of being isolated in the catsle, and is excited (desperate even) to meet a man, even if the the thought actually makes her feel queasy (elated or gassy) or want to impulsively eat (I want to stuff some chocolate n my face!). Elsa meanwhile, has been fully brainwashed by her dumb parents into thinking that she is the most dangerous person in the world, and that opening the gates is the worst idea in the history of the world, and she is extremely afraid she is going to hurt everyone. And the duet at the end of the song; both parts complement each other beautifully. The reprise of the song later in the movie is also a highlight, though unlike the reprises in Tangled, which far outshine the original songs, I don't like it as much as the original version of this song. However, the bits of Frozen Heart that play at the end are cool. This is my favorite song from Frozen hands down.

Songs I think will be in top 10

The Circle of Life (The Lion King)
A Whole New World (Aladdin)
Prince Ali (Aladdin)
Part of Your World (The Little Mermaid)
Colours of the Wind (Pocahontas)
I'll Make A Man Out Of You (Mulan)

A few Beauty and the Beast songs like "Belle" and "Something There" aren't on the list yet so 1-2 of those could show up

10. Something There (Beauty and the Beast, 1991)

Sung by Belle, the Beast, Lumiere, Mrs. Potts and Cogsworth
Performed by Paige O'Hara, Robby Benson, Jerry Orbach, Angela Lansbury and David Ogden Stiers
Music by Alan Menken Lyrics by Howard Ashman

Best Lyric: Belle: New and a bit alarming, who'd have ever thought that this could be?

This is the shortest, simplest song in Beauty and the Beast. It's also the most important plotwise, and if it hadn't been executed well, the entire movie would have been difficult to believe. In just three short verses and a bridge recalling "Belle" from earlier in the film, the romantic spark between the Beast and Belle is believably conveyed. They don't seem to be in love yet, but they become much friendlier, and really enjoy one another's company. After how awful the Beast treat her in the beginning of the film, it would have been difficult for any filmmakers to make it believable that Belle could fall for such a brute, but the genius of Menken and Ashman do it. It's not as flashy as some of the numbers in the film, but it's one of my favorites.

9. Circle of Life (The Lion King, 1994)

Performed by Carmen Twillie and Lebo M.
Music by Elton John Lyrics by Tim Rice

Nominated for the 1995 Best Original Song Oscar (Lost to Can You Feel the Love Tonight?)

Best Lyric: But the sun rollin' high through the sapphire sky keeps great and small on the endless round.

Really, the top 9 songs on this list really could go in any order; the one I've placed them in is purely my own personal preference. If The Lion King isn't Disney's most iconic film (it's certainly up there), "Circle of Life" is certainly Disney's most iconic opening/animation sequence. The beginning of the song withe sun and the Swahili vocals is synonymous with this film, and even really the landscape of cinema in general. This song is so iconic, everyone thought the "Vuelie" chant at the beginning of Frozen sounded like "The Lion King". In my personal opinion, this is by far the best part of the Lion King film, and none of the rest of the film lives up to it, even if it is very good. This sequence is just so transcendental that really nothing can ever really hope to live up to it again. It's really hard to even judge this as a song, the sequence that accompanies is so great. The tune is fittingly epic in its sound and its the only great Disney song, in my opinion, that could not have been improved if the characters had been singing it. Really, people have been showing off their babies, dogs and other small things in the way Rafiki shows off Simba ever since 1994, and its all due to this song. No one really knows the words to the Swahili sections, but the song is so beloved by our culture that people have insisted on singing their own nonsense syllables. I don't think it is the best Disney song because I simply have found eight others I like even more.

I love "The Circle of Life", it's so wrong that it looks like it'll end up behind that dumb song about a magic carpet ride. There's only two songs that are allowed to outrank it.

8. God Help the Outcasts (The Hunchback of Notre Dame, 1996)

Sung by Esmeralda
Performed by Heidi Mollenhauer
Music by Alan Menken Lyrics by Stephen Schwartz

Best Lyric: I ask for nothing. I can get by. But I know so many less lucky than I..

This is probably the least popular song in my top 10, but it shouldn't be. It's probably the one I listen to the most right now, since the ones above it are a lot more overexposed and overplayed. This is probably the simplest of the songs in Hunchback; most of it is simply Esmeralda wandering the cathedral praying for her people. The actual congregation members of the cathedral pray for nothing but personal gain, things like wealth, fame, glory and love. Meanwhile, Esmeralda is totally selfless in a completely moving way. She is a nice contrast and shows a more positive Christian contrast to the obviously corrupt Frollo. The melody is soft, sweet and nuanced. The section where the congregation asks for god and his angels to bless them, followed by Esmeralda's plea for nothing is a beautiful use of contrast. This is also the song that causes Quasimodo to fall in love with Esmeralda. If any song from Hunchback deserved an Oscar nom (there were at least 3 or 4 songs that deserved noms, really though), this one was it. It develops Esmeralda into a really compelling character, and does everything a great Disney song should.
